Gum dangerous????

This was so weird to me.  i just have to know if anyone else was told this.  I emailed my NUT the other day to ask about when I could add tofu back into my diet.  I said, oh and by the way, I love SF gum.  Is it too soon to have that?

She replied and said NO WAY to gum.  Said that if I were to accidentally swallow a piece, it could be really dangerous.  Stupid me had NEVER thought of that!

So now, as a SF gum ADDICT, i am wondering if I will EVER have the nerve to put a piece in my mouth again?????

Has anyone else heard this before?

If you can poop you're pretty safe.

How many times did you swallow gum before your surgery??  If the answer is very seldom, then I think you're OK.     I chew gum at least once a day.

I was told the same thing ... no gum ... no way ... never!

The reason I was given was that the opening to our pouches is so small that there is a possibility that if we were to accidentally swallow the gum, then it could plug the opening and not be able to pass through, which could require them to go in with some sort of scope to get it out ... not pleasant and certainly not worth it.

That being said, when was the last time you swallowed your gum!  I suppose if you were really concious of the gum and you chewed for a little while and spit it out you would probably be okay, but I tend to be the person who thinks that I probably would be the one who got hit on the back and accidentally swallowed my gum and ended up having to have some stupid gumectomy procedure or something, so I wont do it!

I was told the exact thing.  So I choose not to chew it.  I love gum!  But the risk is not worth it to me.  Now someone else made a good point though.  I need to ask my nut about it.  If it got swallowed could peanut butter oil break it down to pass?  I don't swallow gum on purpose but on occasions before surgery I had on accident.  Mainly someone would startle me and whoopsee there it goes.  Or fall asleep with it in mouth then wake with it gone!

My dr told me the only issue w/ gum is that the chewing might make you gassy. It didn't and I've been happily chewing ever since :-)

Now you did it.

I had to go and find a piece of gum in my office..I did not have one, so I had to go and beg,,,

I couldn't do gum before because it would cause everything to repeat on me, because it would cause everything to repeat on me, because it would cause everything to repeat one me, DOH!

So I don't do it now, either. Anyways, I'd be the one who needed a 'gum-ectomy'.

For me it was either chew gum or smoke again, so I now chew gum.  But, I was never told I couldn't
