That is the question.....My nut says' no snacking as in only 3 meals a day.  Which is fine for me since I wasn't a big snacker to begin with... the only variation would be to add a protien drink if i'm low for the day...... I think Nut's have diff thinkings on the whole snack thing....Just wondering..

Do you snack or not????

My nut's rule is NO grazing or snacking.

Due to some complications, that rule has been temporarily suspended for me. Once they get those fixed, I'm to go to 3 meals, with scheduled snacks. Even now I'm food journaling, including times and everything.

Me, too. It seems that I'm always eating something.

Thing is, to get in 1300 calories a day in 3 meals, I'd have to be eating 433 cals a meal-- and that'd be hard to do without stretching sumpin' right?

I like it better this way. And it serves my body well, I think. Keep doin' the do, WendyBoo!

My doc has a strict no snacking rule too, with three meals a day.  But here's the problem, a 'meal' for me is still a 1/4 cup of food.  So, I've had to add a few 'snacks' -- protein bars, cheese, nuts--something along those lines a couple of times a day.  Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to get in 600-800 calories a day.

I snack. My doc says not to but it's impossible for me to get in over 600 calories on meals alone and I feel awful when I eat that little. I try to keep my snacks useful though. String cheese, or cottage cheese, etc. Something that gives me some protein.

MIne says snacking is a major no-no. I think they are afraid of us grazing ourselves big again. However, most of the new research says that eating 6-8 small meals a day is actually better and keeps  your metabolism up. I listen to my doc and NUT on most things but if I don't snack, I only get about 600 calories a day. That is sure to screw with the metabolism and it doeesn't need to be messed up any more.

See I got a problem with the term "snack."  It implies something extra.  If you plan to eat, say, 1000 calories and you split it up this way:

Meal 1 - 200 cals
Meal 2 - 150 cals
Meal 3 - 300 cals
Meal 4 - 150 cals
Meal 5 - 200 cals

That's five meals with different caloric weights assigned to them.  The two 150 calorie meals would feel like snacks because they're bound to be either a) lighter fare or b) smaller in quantity, but it is all getting you toward your daily goal of 1000 calories.

And with 5 meals, who has the capacity to graze (raises hand...runs away)

Seriously though.  When I have at least 5 meals planned I don't tend to graze.  By the time I get hungry it's time for my next meal.

I often find the advice given to us is contradictory, like:

1.  No snacks but we want you at X calories per day - well as long as I am eating a well balanced, high protein diet within my caloric target, why does that matter?

2.  Eat all your proteins first, veggies second, carbs third...- Sorry, that crap doesn't work.  Leads to not eating veggies/carbs and that can lead to bad things.  I mix up my protein/veggies/carbs to get balanced meals

Anyhoo...

I eat like 5 times a day to get in 1100 calories.  Some days (like today which is a "big pouch" day for me) that's easy.  Some days I have to add an extra meal in there to get what I need.

Nut's mean well but I think this is off base.  Most experts recommend that even "McPeople" (the normal stomached population) eat small meals 3-5 times a day.
