Hi gang! (aka update on mom)

I am home for tonight, I will ride back to mom's tomorrow. She has dial up internet and its crappy dial up at that (shes a lightyear from the CO so even a *normal* phone line has issues)... So yeah, no OH camping.

Anywho -

The official word is mom has diverticulitis, which causes "pockets" to form on your colon...

Stuff got stuck in one of her "pockets" and then infected, which caused it to fill with pus, which caused inflammation, which caused a blockage, which caused increased pressure, which caused a perforation, which caused the infected pus to leak into her abdomen...

ya with me so far?

basically she was fulla infected ****

her white blood cell count was nearly 30k (under 10k is normalish)

her doc, yay for him, took a 2nd look at her CT scan and said "nope, antibiotics aint gonna do it, we're goin in!"

Sooo they removed the infected part of her colon, and put in a colostomy bag. She will have that for 3 months, then just when shes feeling like her old self, theyre gonna go back in and put her pooper back together.

Now here's the rub: She's been having pain for a WHILE, not sure how long, but pretty decent abdominal pain. Her surgeon said she must have been blocked for a good bit of time to cause enough pressure for that thing to pop like it did.

She's not had RNY, or any other surgery, ever before.

So folks - EVEN IF YOU AREN'T ALTERED... BLOCKAGES HAPPEN... K?

She could have died!

Anywho - I am doing ok, and after losing a couple pounds in there, I smacked myself in the head and said "EAT YOU MORON" because I don't need to be in the hospital too heh. I'm at my "uhoh" low weight of 155...looks pretty but yeah, I can count ribs. So today and yesterday i packed a snack bag and have been carrying food everywhere with me. I'm eating!

Things are goin slow - moms bowels werent waking up like they should but she finally had some noise in there today so she got her NG tube out. Tomorrow she'll get to have some liquids and then on to food from there..yay! She hasn't eaten since last monday so she's suffering from food detox and general wimpyness...

She's also terrified and moving like an 80 year old woman, which scares me to death. *sigh*

But she IS on the mend.

Anyway thanks everyone for your positive thoughts and prayers and chicken swinging. She'll be in there another 5-6 days, then home. I'm staying with her until she's home so I will be intermittent around here.

Someone wanna take the rant for me? :)

Lexi,  Glad to hear they found out what it was and it is being treated.  I've heard that diverti (sp?) can be pretty nasty.

yes girl, please get some good food in you.  You don't need to be in the hospital either!!

I'll continue to lift your mom in prayer.  You get some much needed rest.

Glad to hear your Mum is doing as well as can be expected - it's always rough when our parents are sick (reminds us they're mortals).  Take care of yourself too.

Diverticulits is nasty, but completely manageable.  My Dad has had it for over 25 years with no issues... he's been on an ULTRA high fibre diet from the beginning (the man puts a cup of unprocessed bran into every meal he eats and has done for almost all of my life  ).  There's probably a middle road solution... but my Dad is an all or nothing kind of guy.

Best wishes for your Mum's speedy recovery.

Hey, Lexie --

Glad your mom is beginning to recover!  I'm sure she's glad you'll be with her while she's in the hospital.

BTW, you know how they have a list of the 10 most beautiful words in the English Language?  I remember that "dawn" was one.

Well, I have a list of the yuckiest words in the English Language, and "pus" ranks high on my list.  :)  (And I'm a nurse!)  (That's the pus monster -- shooting out his stuff).
