Preventing Constipation Help
I just went through a horrible week of constipation. My doctor prescribed a gross mix that I had to drink to start all over. How do you keep things working right? I do not want to give up the whey protein shake powder that I finally found that I like, nor my favorite snack of yogurt...but might the dairy protein deal be what's causing the problem? Or just not enough veggies? Or should I just take fiber supplements every night? Or?? I know its different with everyone, but I was wondering what's working for others.
I find that if my protein count is high and my fat is low, the poop don't flow (hey, I'm a poet and I didn't even know it!).
Also, fiber!!! I eat Kashi a lot and it seems to keep things moving along quite nicely.

I had problem with that in the past. Now changing diet and more dairy and protein in it - there is no way I can handle that.
What do I do? if the things are not moving very good every 48 hrs - plain water or coffee high enema... works like a charm and no more constipation.
And no, it is not harmful or addictive if you know what you are doing, and how often. It actually helps and stimulates the muscles... just have to be done right. Detoxifies the body, makes me feel really good. Not the enema, the "after enema" effect. The enema i hate and I dread that every day, but I hate being gassy, constipated even more, so...
To know what to do - google "High enema" and "coffee enema"..

It took me a while to find the right balance. Right after surgery I had to take Milk of Magnesia once or twice a week. But now... here's what I do:
* 2 colace per day (am & pm)
* 2 fish oil caps (am & pm)
* 25-30g fiber per day (usually have to use FiberSure once a day to get to that total)
* 64oz water everyday
* eat enough healthy fats

I find that if I eat a lot of dense protein like chicken, turkey, cheese wedge, I have lots of problems. So, some days, I go back to the "soft food" stage, egg beaters, oatmeal, cottage cheese.
I use 2 Colace a day and make sure I get in at least 64 oz of fluid a day. I'm toying with the idea of introducing a teaspoon of olive oil into my diet per day. This worked for me when I was on a liquid protein fasting diet. We have to keep ourselves well lubed.
I was also taking 2 tsp. of Benefiber a day but my nut said to be careful with it. She said that if you don't take in a lot of water a day, it can have a nasty binding effect. So, I cut it out of my diet.
I hear that it does get better once we are allowed to have fruits and raw veggies again. But to be honest, I'm not sure where I'm supposed to find room for them. It's all I can do to get in 60 grams of protein a day, and I drink half of that. Good luck to you.
