I ask this to my fellow WLS friends.
I have my dream job, doing what i have always wanted to do., although i am only part time and have no benefits.
i have been very sick the past few months and it has been getting worse since i dont have insruance i cant see a doctor.
I applied for a position at a call center. i hate HATE this work and i was offered a job here where i am paid better and have great insurance. I dont know what to do though,  what is greater, health or happiness.

Especially in the job market right now, i am shocked that i have the opportunity for the job with benefits because it seems like everyone is getting laid off and no one is hiring. I have stability in my current job and know i cant be laid off because of the economy, but i dont know how sable the new job would be..

anyone have any thought comments concerns?

You really are between a rock and a hard spot!
Is there anyway to take the job and get your medical needs taken care with the idea of coming back to your dream job in a few months? Will that dream job not be a possility if you leave it?
Many call centers have very flexible hours and benefits starting after 30 hours per week. Is there anyway to manage both jobs?

The dream job would have to hire someone in my place, and they would be very very very upset to see me go, and they want to be able to provide me benefits but since its a church their funds are tight and the insurance is way too expensive..and really crappy

i might try and see if there is a way to manage both jobs but i dont think the schedules would work out very well.

I used to work in a call center. I never had to take inbound calls so it wasn't too bad but I know what you are talking about. It is very monotonous.  However, they do provide good benefits which I can see is your draw.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

The mom in me says that you need to take th call center job.  But double check on the insurance.  Most have a pre-existing condition clause that may not cover your current illnesses anyway.

I work in a hospital.  I used to do billing, and collecting money from insurance companies.  All it takes for a person to be bankrupt is one illness...  medical bills are HUGE.  The hospital worker in me says take the job with the benefits.  But, the dreamer in me says its great that you have a job that you love... still, reasonably, it concerns me that you would get sick and be left with THOUSANDS of dollars of medical bills.  There is still that "What if?..." to be considered.

Well, I now have a job that pays well, and have benefits.  It is not my dream job.

I think you need to decide  if you can be happy doing a job you do not like - happiness is a stae of mind - the one you have a control over.  I am happy even though I do not have my "dream job"

Just my thoughts - take the job with the benefits FOR NOW - not much good to have your dream job if you are too ill to go to work or enjoy it. Later - when you are sorted out health wise - and you will - consider looking for that dream job again. Things have a way of working themselves out. Good luck to you!

In this economy - a dream job is the one that pays well with benefits. In life, we have to go through the bad (or not so good) to get to the other side.

Try to give 2 weeks notice with the current job and explain that while you love the job that with the current situation you have to do something else. Also offer to train your replacement. As hard as it might be...They will see you as a great worker and that could make the difference on a recommendation and the possiblity of ever going back.

Here's a corny saying but it really is true... When Life Gives you Lemons - Make Lemonade!

The practical part of me says take the call center job.  Yes they hire and lay off pretty regularly, but the truth is that a lot of "non stable" folks take jobs at call centers (ie: students, young folks, people returning to the workforce) so their turn-over rate is astronomical.  Generally, if you're any good at meeting their targets you can stay as long as you choose.

Think about what it is you like about your dream job, and once you narrow it down (ie: the buzz from helping people, the responsibility, etc) see if there isn't some way you can find a similar reward in the call-center job (easier said than done I know... but it does help if you can do it).
