what does it matter if I drink from a straw??? I understand the air issue, but if I do it carefully??? It is the only way I can drink my protein shakes (I did it this way before surgery-- and now I cannot stomach them--reminds me of milk--ughhh) So I thought if I did the straw I could get them down easier??? What do ya'll think? I am about 8 weeks out.....
Thanks in advance..

I drank from a straw from the very beginning.  It worked for me.  Try it, if you have pain then leave it alone.  The next year of your life is going to be finding what works for you.

My doctor told me to do what is best for ME!  He saw I was having trouble getting  in the proper amounts of fluid each day.  He said try a straw and if I don't have any discomfort or excess air then it is fine.  Best of luck!

when i had a problem with the smell of protein shakes - i used coffee mug. It limited how much I had to smell it and did not introduce extra air.

I choose that not a straw since holding gas  (passing gas at work is not my idea of fun) was too uncomfortable...I generate enough gas from food, that getting any extra - was not a good idea for me.

I think each of us needs to figure out exactly what works for us.  There are not right or wrong answers.....straws for the majority of people can be an issue---but for many---its not a big deal.  All you can do is try it and see if it works for you....

I drink from a straw.  Didn't as early out as you are, though, so I can neither confirm or deny the whole air thing for newly post-ops.  I find it especially helpful if I've made a protein shake with water.  I don't particularly like protein shakes with any water (even water mixed with milk) but on carby days, I can do take one for the cause).

Straws all the way for me also. Try it out - and if it works for you - go for it! Good luck!

I am 4 weeks out and have drank from a straw and it did not bother me, another suggestion would be the blender bottle from GNC , thats where I get my protein shakes. I love the bottle it has an opening the size of a quarter to dink from, with a flip top lid, very conveinent.

My surgeon instructs us not to drink from a straw. When I do, I usually get quite a bit of gas and feel really full after drinking a normal amount for me..usually get a stomach ache...So it doesn't work for me but it might for you!! Good luck!
