Do you ever drink with meals?

Like another poster mentioned earlier, the not drinking with meals thing is tough for me. It was going okay until I started eating more foods and some things just almost gag me if I can't take a sip or two or if there is spice that is a problem too. Oh, and it just seems unnatural to have PB2 and jelly without some milk!! :)

Well, I got thinking about my late evening snack. If I don't really care if the food stays in my pouch because I am heading to bed in a couple hours, does it really matter if I drink with it?

And is a sip or two the problem or is it drinking a whole glass that is?

I realize this is an issue because you push food through too fast and may be hungrier later, but for now that is definitely not a problem. However, I see how it could set me up for later. Mostly just wondering if I can take a sip with, say, a burger for example and not compromise it staying in the pouch.

Thanks,

Denise

Personally, I do not drink with meals ever. It's a very slippery slope, in my opinion.

The couple of times that I accidently drank something with my meal (out of sheer habit), I threw up the minute that liquid hit my stomach. Maybe it was because I'm pretty early out. I don't know.

My surgeon says that 1-2 sips with a meal is alright.  I had a very hard time with this until about month 4.  I just needed to rinse the food and taste out.  found that I could suck on an ice cube and that would help.  Now I am 5 months out and I rarely need a sip of water with a meal.  And I never drank a full glass of anything during a meal.

While I have taken a half-dozen (total since surgery) sips while eating, I agree with the previous poster. . . this is a very slippery slope for me, and I'm not going down that slope.

My decision is based on the information I've been given by my doc, my nut, and the general consensus here.

I drink a little milk with just about every meal. It has never been a problem with me as I still don't get hungry, so if the food slides through it's not an issue. If it starts being a problem, I'll rethink it.

You are quite a bit earlier out than me, so you should probably keep your sips to a minimum to make sure you can get your protein in. The liquid will certainly take up some room. Milk would probably be the best choice, since it has some protein in it. Just don't overdo it.

I think that your point about it not being an issue right now and rethinking if it becomes one is an interesting one. I feel that way too, but also don't want to expose myself to something that I'm not sure I'll be able to control as well later down the line. I think in my logical mind that if I start having more hunger, I'd simply stop drinking with meals (again, I'm talking sips, not large amounts), but then my other mind--the one that became morbidly obese--worries that I might have trouble stopping. I think the same holds true for just about anything we RNYers choose to do that deviates from the plan prescribed to us by our nutritionists and docs.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Denise

ETA: I may just try the rinse and spit route and see if that helps at all.

Thanks for all the opinions.

I do.  Early out it was mainly to get the TASTE out of my mouth, I hate lingering tastes.  I would swish and spit, or sip.  Sometimes I have to brush my teeth also.  If I over-eat and feel a tiny bit sick, I brush my teeth immediately and hit up an Altoid.  It helps immensely.  This doesn't happen much these days, but in the early stages where I could eat one bite too much of smushed chicken salad and feel sick - RUN TO THE MOUTHWASH/TOOTHBRUSH and MINT.

As for actually sitting with a drink at a meal, I do.  If we go out to eat, I have my drink.  I don't chug, I have a few sips.  If I want a glass of wine out I will order it, and that takes me FOREVER to sip because I am an instant drunk, so it's probably better that I order that - because then I eat better.  ;)

Still pre op. I have one more visit with my dietician on June 9th then it goes to the surgeon office and hopefully schedule to see the surgeon by the end of June. Then off to insurance it goes for approval. She is thinking sometime in July or August at the latest.

She gave me 4 goals this month to work on for surgery:
1. Eat a high protein food with each meal.
2. Make sure protein shakes have less than 15 gms of carbs (1 carb serving)
- about 20 grams protein
- under 200 calories
3. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to finish a meal
4. Separate eating and drinking by 30 minutes.

I told her about my height has decreased from 5'6 to 5'4 & 3/4 as I was just at my family doctor ask to have my height checked. So recheck herself as well. And yep I did get shorter. So now she had to put that in my chart and refigure the bmi's from previous ones. I weighed in yesterday at 272.7 lbs Bmi at 45.7 and percent of body fat was 49.9% I start out at 317.5 lbs on Jan 8, 2009 which was my highest weight ever. I believe that was over a 52 bmi ugh! She said I am doing a great job. Told her I was trying out the protein drinks and vitamins. She gave me a few samples of protein drinks and vitamins. I try the nectar strawberry kiwi that was awful. So far of the nectar i can't stand the roadside lemonaide, strawberry kiwi or the carribean cruiser. I like the unjury strawberry shorbert as long as i mix it with sf lemonaide.

Hey Denise,

since I am underweight, my surgeon has told me to drink with meals.  So I do!!  I eat every 2 hours, also.   I don't drink very much with my meals...maybe 1/4 cup of liquid...just enough to wet my mouth or push the food down.  But I could never drink an entire glass of liquid ~ just no room.
