Hi,

I am Type II diabetic and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of not being able to wear nail polish on your fingers or toes.  I know I am not suppose to soak my feet any longer than 15 minutes but I just have never heard about the nails.

Thanks for your replies,
Teresa

I've never heard of this either?  try checking with your endocrinologist or PCP?

Hi,

I'm a nurse and I was never told that diabetics couldn't paint their nails.  I am also diabetic like you are and no doctor has ever told me that I couldn't paint my nails.  If you want to know for sure ask your doctor.

A big thing with diabetics and their feet are that diabetics are never supposed to go barefoot.  Your feet can get diabetic neuropathy and if you go barefoot you could possible step on something and not realize it and it could cause problems, so it is highly, strongly recommended for diabetics never to go barefoot.

Good luck,

You just want to make sure that you aren't painting over any infection or problem so it isn't visible.  I've not heard of another reason.

The only thing I was told about nail polish was to be sure that I took it completely off every couple of days to check for sores, infections, or any discolouration of the nails themselves. I was never told that I couldn't wear it at all.

be careful getting pedicures, especially at the "high volume" places where they tend to rush.  Even the smallest nick can cause a bad infection and lead to severe problems in diabetics....

Thanks for everyone's replies.  Maybe it was because they wanted to check the color or tint of the nail.  Anyway, i can polish my finger nails at least. LOL

Thanks,
Teresa

Its not an issue for type I diabetics so I don't see why it would be a problem for type II diabetics.  The only exception is at medical appointments.  Endocrinologist may check the nails for signs of related metabolic problems like ridges in the nails.

Do you remember who told you this? I'm wondering if it was in relation to your actual surgery date. That would be the only reason that I can think of to not wear nail polish on your fingers & toes--so that they can check your oxygen levels during & after surgery.
