I just stumbled upon something that said NO STRAWS EVER after gastric bypass!  Eek!  Really?  Ever?  I like straws!    Especially when I'm sick - I like to have those bendy straws.  LOL

But, seriously?  Never again?

Yesterday I learned no gum and now today, no straws.

I haven't had surgery yet, but my dr. told me I had to stay away from straws.
Using a straw adds air to your digestive tract... so for me...

No straws.. I know it sucks because I ALWAYS use a straw.  I've had to go "cold turkey" on them and honestly.... I miss them!

But I won't let a piece of plastic come between me and how good I will feel down the road.

You should always do what YOUR doctor says, but I use straws all the time.  I didnt for the first month or so.

Stay away...DD and I went to Sonic.  I got a large water.  Out of habit, I put the straw in and took a sip....OUCH OUCH OUCH!  I was shocked at the amount of air that I sucked in and it took a good 10 minutes to get past it.  Lesson learned.

As far as gum, the issue it is getting stuck if you accidentally swallow it.  I honest have not been tempted with gum as much as I thought I would.  I was a constant gum chewer pre op.

I have been using straws since about two months out with no issues.

My doctor/nut use the thought that as long as you can tolerate it, it is ok.

They are also ok with sugarless gum in moderation, so I also have started that two months out.  It helps with the bad breath.

Definately stay away from straws in the beginning, they do cause air, gas, pain.  I can use them now, but I rarely do and I use them carefully.

The straw thing is really depenednt on your surgeon.  do what they say.

however my surgeon encourged me to use straws especially in the hospital.  He put straws on the medical orders because I could not drink enough without one.  I never had any excess gas pressure or  pain from using a straw.  I still use them to this day.  almost 11 months out.

again I say follow your dr. orders

I have used straws since about two weeks out.  If I didn't I would NEVER get my protein shakes or water down.

I'm pre-op (7 more days, omg can't wait!) and I am addicted to straws.  I use them all the time, for everything.  I have my final pre-op appt. with my surgeon tomorrow, and I'm hoping he'll be of the "if it doesn't hurt, you can use it" camp.  The nurses at my surgeon's office have both had RNY and they recommended a sippy cup.  So I bought a sippy cup to try that and see how it was, and I thought I got alot more air with it than I do the straw.

I'd say just do what your doc says.  I will hate giving up precious, wonderful, bendy, beautiful straws, but if the doc says no straws, then no straws.
