So funny this came up....

I too had been told to NEVER use a straw (told this by other patients), etc.... I admit I ignored what they all said and went ahead and used straws starting at about 2wks post-op...ran into one of the folks who instructed me to never use a straw and they gave me the lecture of a lifetime...all about swallowing air, etc... I decided to have a talk with my surgeon about it...he said to me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with using straws if you so desire and you tolerate it...I was so absolutely thrilled to hear this!!!!  I would first double check with your surgeon's preferences and then if he gives ya the all clear, go hog wild with straws!!!

Thanks everyone!  I'm not a big gum chewer, so that wasn't a big deal - but my straws...WAH!

Sounds like some can tolerate them - so I'll ask the surgeon and maybe try them after awhile.  :)

My book from the surgeons office said straws are ok.  I personally don't use them any more just out of preference.  Gum on the other hand....I chew it every day.  That is the only way I can wait at least 30 minutes after eating to drink.  If I didn't have my gum I would croak!  Sugarless of course.
