RNY with history of MRSA
Has anyone had the RNY who had a previous history of MRSA? I have a girlfriend who wants and needs this surgery, but she has a history of MRSA and wants to know if anyone has had a history and had the surgery without getting an infection. She hasn't had an problems for a few years, but is still concerned.
My husbnad is having the surgery next month. He had a localized case of MRSA a few months ago. He dcided to not even tell the Dr. since it's all cleared up now and has hat cuts and scrapes since then with no problems. I'm not sure that he's doing the right thing, but he's sure of it so I can't do much.
I am sorry but your husband needs to tell his surgeon that he had MRSA. It is for his safety and the surgeon needs to take certain precautions that he wouldnt' have to take on other patients to prevent an reoccurance. He is really being foolish by not telling and is putting his life in danger. If his incision get infected, it can really cause a problem and if the surgeon knows, thing can be done to prevent it. They will probably also give him IV antibiotics as a precaution.
Where was her infection? Sometimes MRSA can be in the nose and not cause any problems. But once an incision is made there is a possibility it can be transferred to the incision. Best thing to do is let the MD know of her history so a nasal swab can be done and if it is positive the MD can treat her prior to surgery.
Well they told her when she was in the hospital last that it's always in the nose and had her do bactrim stuff in her nose. Her infection was in an incision she had for a hystorectomy. She did plan on telling them she had it, she just wanted to know if they would turn her away from having this surgery. Her BMI is 54 and she has all the illness of morbid obesity.
I don't think it will keep her from having surgery. They will take more precautions to try to limit her risk of re-infection. They will wear special gowns and masks and will be extra careful to try not to expose her to more infection. Also, they will be more careful with her after surgery care in the hospital. She definitely needs to tell them so that they can do all they can to limit her possible exposure.
I had a serious MRSA infection in 2007 when I delivered my daughter by c-section and contracted the infection in the hospital. It did not prevent me from having my surgery. I am currently only 4 days post-op (surgery was Monday) and do not show any signs of infection at this time. I was given a different kind of antibiotics in the hospital following surgery to prevent the MRSA.
My best friend has MRSA and 10 days before we had surgery she had a big infection in her finger. She got it lnaced and they sent it in for labwork to see if was MRSA. Our dr said that he would not perform surgery if the tests came back positive for MRSA.
At 3:00pm the day before we had surgery, she found out that it was not MRSA, just a staff infection, so we were able to have surgery Together as planned!
Tell the dr. I wouldn't want any complications during or after surgery
