So went away for the weekend.  I met a girl there and I ended up telling her I was having WLS. Don't ya know, she had it done twice. The second time she "almost died, b/c the surgeon used dirty instruments" and guess who her surgeon was. Mine. Now, here's the part where I am very confused. I know that people can gain their weight back. She was about 350 +. I asked her how big her pouch is and she the "size of an egg" I watched this girl eat huge amounts of food (2 plates full) and am confused how this could be. She also said the reason she gained all her weight back is b/c "everything goes right thru her" If that was the case wouldn't she be skinny? I have goggled this surgeon out the wazoo and have found nothing. Her surgery was in 96. I am just so confused. Please enlighten me.

Your pouch is usually the size of an egg right after surgery.  In time, it stretches a bit.  It is supposed to.

When she said everything goes right through her, she may have meant right through her pouch.  Like, maybe her stoma is stretched.  Then her pouch would empty really fast so she could eat more and would also get hungry faster.

As far as your surgeon using dirty instruments, well, I find that hard to believe.  Hospitals generally sterilize things very carefully, at least those things that are reused.  Many supplies these days, at least in the U.S., are one time use, disposable things.  So they would come in sterile packages.

You could ask your surgeon about it.  He can't tell you anything about another patient, of course, but he could explain to you how all instruments are cleaned.

The fact that she was not successful with her surgery does not mean you won't be and does not mean your doc is not a good surgeon.  But you could also ask your surgeon what percentage of his patients gain weight back after a few years.

I have no idea girl.  That seems like a lie.  I had similar experiences.  Everybody knew somebody who had the surgery and almost died or is sick today and in/out of the hospital. Charge it to hate.  Because those same people are so amazed by my rapid weightloss I think they want surgery and probably have looked into it but are afraid.  So ignore it, investigate for yourself, pray and move forward.  I had surgery on 12/20/2010  I was 317 the morning of surgery and now I weigh 265.  I am pleased with the results.  And i can barely eat a cup of food at one sitting, it seems like the young lad you mentioned, ate through her tool.

Take Care!!!

The surgeon used dirty instruments??  I find that incredibly difficult to believe.  If she knew that she would have collected quite a sum from the malpractice suit.

I am only 6 months out but I cannot possibly believe her pouch is still the size of an egg if she is eating large quantities of food.  Now it could still be small and she could have weight gain if she ate small amounts of high calorie, high fat food throughout the day.  That is the way some patients managed to eat around their surgery.

Don't linger on her.  For whatever reasons, her surgery has not been a success.  It does not mean that yours will not be.

Hugs and Good Luck!

Sounds like a big fat (pardon the pun) lie!  All of it!

Every time I tell someone I'm pre-op for rny, they try to tell me of some great "diet" they are doing and that I should check it out!  Or that they knew someone...or whatever...

Just take it all with a huge grain of salt and keep on truckin'!

I told no one other than my boss so I could be off work and the person takeing me to the hospital  .  This was to avoid the negative stories that people seem to want to tell you .

You can ask your sugeon ( or his nurse) for his infection and sucess rate for WLS..  Maybe able to just get it online too - but not sure how .

Possibly that gal is not being very truthful or just plain nutz.......people do have mental issues that become more important than the weight loss to them and need some one else to blame .

I wouldn't consider her a reliable source of information of any kind, personally. And if her surgery was done in 96, there have been light years of improvement since.

Did she appear to be rich? Because, if she nearly died because of dirty instruments then the lawsuit that would  follow should have been pretty large.

That is true her pouch could still be small but her stoma is stretched from not chewing well or eating and drinking at the same time (hence food going right thru her pouch causing her to feel hungry sooner). If she had surgery in 1996, she is more than likely not still malabsorbing fats/calories.

Or she could have stretched the stoma and the pouch. Whether you know it or not you will be able to eat almost normal portions the further out you get. Back in 96 the rules were definately different than they are now. Shoot they are drastically different from what they were in 2000.

Hope this helps a little.

Don't get me wrong, I still think she is a LIAR though!
Just a few more steps to wonderland......and believe me I am taking baby steps (ugh).

How did she know the instruments were dirty?? Did she do an inspection prior the the surgery? I know if I have a problem, it is because I dont follow the WLS rules. Eat to fast, to big of bites, eat dry food.
Research the doctor, and trust your instincts.
