5 days after surgery and....
I'm finally home! UGH!!!! Nausea, nausea, nausea! The surgery on Thursday was good. Thursday night was good and so was Friday morning. At lunch time on Friday they had pulled me off of the pcp pump and put me on clear liquids. I had chicken broth, protein jello and a shot of liquid lortab elixer. From then on... my days were miserable. They couldn't get the nausea under control after 4 different kinds of anti-nausea meds. They stopped the liquid lortab and pulled the clear liquids but nothing helped.
Finally on Saturday afternoon my mom and I realized that I hadn't had any pain medicine since that lortab. I was not only nauseous but in major pain. I asked the nurse if I could have the stuff that was in the pain pump (dilaudid) since I haven't had meds in over 24 hours and plus that stuff gave me no problems. I was able to get that not thru the pcp pump but through the IV and OMG!!! Within 10 minutes, the pain was minimal and oddly enough, the nausea was GONE!!! My mom said I was like a whole different person once I got that. The docs thought it was strange that it was helping with the nausea but at that point I didn't care.
Anyways... it took a few days but I'm no longer nauseous and was able to come home today. Still lots of pain in certain areas of my stomach and am also on full liquids now. Yay!
I did NOT see any light at the end of the tunnel a few days ago and totally regretted getting this done. Now that I'm home and the nausea is gone, maybe there is some light! It can only get better right???
They sent me home with dilaudid and it's good stuff but all I want to do is sleep. So now I'm worried about getting walking in and getting my liquids in.
I'm just taking one day at a time but wanted to share my story. Thanks to everyone who sent private messages. They were great to come home to!
Sorry this is a bit long but what I really wanted to say is this..........Move over!!! Cuz I'm on the losers bench now!!!!!!!
P.S...I feel like my stomach is sooo swollen and way bigger than before. I lost 16lbs pre op and am afraid to step on the scale now to see what it says. How many of you weighed yourself when you got home? Should I just wait until my post op appt??? I don't want to get discouraged cuz I am soooo bloated feeling!

Don't step on the scale yet. You were pumped with IV fluids so it is possible you weigh more. Give it a week before you weigh, in fact maybe wait to have your first weigh at your docs followup.
Sorry about the nausea I dealt with it too. You may find yourself experiencing more, what worked for me was hot peppermint tea. It really settled my pouch down.
Congrats, get ready for a wild ride.

Sorry that happened. I had my surgery two weeks ago and had a very similar experience. Horrible nausea.... That we finally found out was caused by the liquid pain meds. It helped alot to take the medicine while I was eating. It was a nightmare!
I hope you feel better.
I don't regret it at all, but it's the hardest experience I've ever gone through.
Do not worry about your weight right now, just ficus on recovering.
The weight is not going to disappear over night. Do yourself a HUGE favor, and don't stress about how fast you're losing. It's not worth it.

Don't weigh for a week! Sleep as much as you can but get up every hour or so and walk around - don't stay immobile too long. Stay on top of the pain meds. I tried to stop taking them so many times and it was silly.
I promise you at three weeks you will feel a ton better, I do. Almost normal except when I overdo it.

I stepped on the scale at a week and a half and lost 14lbs, and when I went to the doctors the other day, I hadnt lost one more pound. I am so discouraged. 14 lbs in 21 days, that sucks. Im never stepping on that damn scale again. I have my one month a week from today, Im not looking forward to weighing in. Im scared this surgery wont work for me.
You know, when I was in the hospital they had me on a morphine pump. Two days after i went home I had terrible, terrible nausea and couldn't keep anything down. Not even water. I was wretching all the time. I finally went to the ER and they gave me dilaudid to take away the pain since I hadn't been able to get down the pain meds. When did the cat scan they saw nothing was stuck or blocking but they still assumed that there had been a pill stuck or something. I went home feeling GREAT and the nausea hasn't returned. I wonder if it's a nice side effect of the dilaudid?
yeah don't bother with the scale the fluid retention isn't going to go for about another week. Don't be discouraged I had my RNY 2-24-11 and have lost a total of 47 lbs. and 15 inches. Try to keep moving and you'll feel so much better and sip sip sip tha****er 64 oz. Remember to eat slow and remember the 30/30 rule no drinking 30 before or after a meal. You should be on the liquid diet still anything like cream soups are low fat and should be strained. this should keep back that nausea. Best of luck to you as you recover. Take care, Debbie
