To weigh or not to weigh?

I'm a numbers person, I like numbers! I have two minds about the scale...

Early out it can drive you crazy.... if you don't understand how weight works, you can go crazy. Things that some people don't understand:

Weight is not an absolute, it is an average, it changes HOURLY
You will NOT lose evenly, it is a stair-step process with some steep dips and some high points too
You will generally weigh more later in  the day than in teh beginning of the day
you will likely stall in the first few months of your journey and this can last a whiel. I stalled for 35 days!

BUT if you can HANDLE it it is a fount of information. I weighed several times a day for a while so I could UNDERSTAND how my weight changed over the day. I weighed daily so I could understand how my weight changed day in adn day out

My weight followed an interesting pattern after two months of stalling/fluctuations....

I would lose a BUNCH one week
Next week, not so much'
Third week, the scale would not budge
Fourth week it would go UP as much as five or seven pounds!

Then I'd go back to losign a bunch! again..... and once I knew this pattern, it gave me power. I knew what my scale was likely to say at any given time, and it didnt' upset me at all

LATER.... in maintenance I think that the scale is an essential TOOL towards maintenance. If you don't know how your weight is doing, it is hard to STOP a weight gain early. However your clothing does the same thing ...... if it is tight, you don't need to know what the scale is doing to know you have to change things up.

Maintenance - yes. I need to weigh more times. Once a week.

The scale drives me f%$#@^& nuts!....soooooooo to keep my sanity I changed my routine at a year out and has made much progress to goal..

I weigh once a month, naked, first thing in the morning, after I pee on the last day of my TOM cycle.....that is when I am leanest and all mid-cycle bloat and TOM is leaving.

This is when I see all pounds lost for the month or if I am the same.........I have had stalls but no regain since RNY.thankfully...I do not count calories.....That will bring about another issue of insanity  "FOR ME"

I'm in the minority, being one of those people who weighs first thing every morning.  I NEED to know, but don't let the darned thing rule my life.  I have always weighed daily.  Although I usually only fluctuate maybe 2 pounds from day to day since my surgery, I intend to watch it very carefully and make sure it stays that way.  It's a very slippery slope for me and if I go up 3 lbs and stay there more than 2-3 days, I want to know about it because I want find out why and take steps to stop it there.  It's more stressful for me NOT to know.  We are all different, but that's how I am.

I weigh once a week and I think that is A LOT.

I see no reason wrong with not weighing yourself at all. You will get weighed at the doctors and will be able to judge progress by that and keep accountable. There is nothing wrong with that. It may possibly even produce less stress because you won't be worried if you get in a stall for a few weeks.

I weigh myself twice a day. First thing in the morning and last thing at night. The nightly weighing is kind of a sneak peek at my next morning's weight. If I weigh less then I did the night before then I can hopefully expect a loss the next morning. Sometimes, not always.
I write down my morning weight every day. That helps me see my patterns so I don't freak out of there isn't a loss for a while. I am at the stage where my weight stays exactly the same for about a week and then I drop a little. Last week it was 0.6lbs, today it was 2lbs. When I know what to expect I don't get upset. I have had a few gains and that doesn't upset me either because I know I haven't eaten enough to gain that much weight.
I plan on weighing myself daily as I maintain. In the past when I quit weighing it was because I didn't want to see what was there. I knew I would gain and I didn't want to face it. So, as long as I am not running away from the truth I should be ok.
I plan on using my weight as a tool to help me know how much I should be eating daily. I plan on adding in about 100 or so calories a week to see if I lose or gain or stay the same. If I lose then I need to up it, if I gain I need to cut back and if I stay the same then I keep it the same.
Last time I had WLS I lost all the weight and then started regaining. And instead of cutting back at that point I just stopped weighing myself. So that is what I don't want to do.

I weigh every morning and have since surgery.  They don't get me stressed but they do show me if I am heading in the right direction with my weight.  I monitor my weight so I don't gain - though there are some mornings that I weigh more and I know it is due to water weight.  If I see it stays in one place for a few weeks, then I know I am in a stall.  If I see my weight going down, I know I am out of that stall and heading in the right direction.

I use it as one of my 'tools' for losing my weight and I'll use it as a 'tool' to maintain my weight when that time comes.

The scales aren't for everyone, but they are my best friend now and I like it that way.
