freakin annoyed in hospital....Galbladder help!!
ok short version....massive pain last night, went to er, found gallstones also some problems with my bloodwork related to gallbladder...transferred me to hospital where I had my surgery so I am under my surgeons care...My surgeon cannot be contacted until Monday....period....he has his weekend doctors but they cant give me any answers as to if il be going home....if im having surgery soon, or weeks from now...im freaking starving....cant have food, My question is should I push for the surgery asap if he says i should schedule it in a few weeks, I am a nanny and I cant go back to work risking this will happen again but I also cant afford to not work while waiting for the surgery. This happened to me a month ago and I had to go by ambulance last time but they never did a ultrasound so that must have been related to gallbladder ...I just want it out of me .....any advice? I dont mind staying til monday if they are going to take it out but I hate to stay and then have him send me home and risk the agony i went through last night
I would push for it. Have they done a HIDA scan? That would be the best way to tell I would think. I know when my gallbladder acted up and they did the scan they told me it looked like I didn't have a GB. My gallstones had blocked the duct to my gallbladder. They did it as an emergency surgery, but I can understand them waiting until you surgeon gets back. I think I would rather the guy that did my RNY (which I haven't had done yet) be the one to tinker around in there if I needed it. I would make them tell you why they are keeping you until Monday without running further tests. That would bug the hell out me. They could at least have all your labs like HIDA scan and all that good stuff done by time your surgeon gets there on Monday.
I would also push for it to be taken out ASAP!!
Read my last three blog entries about my own personal gall bladder hell starting with the one posted on Jan. 31, 2011. Delaying the inevitable is only going to make you more susceptible to post op complications like what I went through -- and I just got home from the hospital from the second round of complications yesterday afternoon.
Good luck!! I hope your journey ends up better than what I had to end up going through.

Yes, push to have it taken out, if you need to. Good grief, they should be telling you that's what you need done.
But I don't get why you can't get answers now. If your doc isn't available, can't someone else treat you?

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
boy this sounds like my story..went to ER yesterday..they're almost positive it's my gallbladder, ordered a HIDA scan..I call monday to schedule it..meanwhile I go around with bouts of extreme pain where I'm bent over, sweating, and stomach distended til then. Because they don't do the HIDA scan on the weekend...I didn't realize we had to schedule gallbladder attacks..silly me..good luck with your surgery.
I understand your frustration. From my experience as a nurse - surgeons GENERALLY prefer to remove gall bladders when they AREN'T inlfammed and acting up. Just a safer, easier procedure. Having said that - if your gallbladder is SO inflammed and infected and/or bile ducts are blocked - and you are seriously clinically ill - it needs to come out. Be your own advocate and make noise until you get appropriate, adequate care! Take care and good luck!
