Post RNYer's...question for you

This question is for all of your post RNYer's, especially those of you who are a couple years or more out from surgery.

QUESTION:  Does the "feeling of not being hungry" stick around?

I'm a newbie post op.  Right now I don't have HUNGER pain or a desire to eat, no stomach or pouch growling.  Head hunger at time...sure.  But I really have to get myself to eat my 5-6 mini meals per day.  But I don't have a strong sense of "I'm STARVING and my stomach is growling like mad and I have to have something to eat" feeling.

I have a friend who had RNY in 2006 and she says even today she's NEVER actually hungry and often times forgets to eat.  I'm just wondering if this is is true, do the feelings of "LACK OF physical HUNGER" actually stick around long term after surgery or does it wear off in time and you get those growling & rumbling noises again in the tummy; those noises that make you run to your pantry and grab some food!!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences so I'll know what to look forward to in this journey.  Happy Sunday to you!

I am just a little over a year out and my hunger returned around 8 months out. The difference now is that I don't need a large quantity of food to fulfill my hunger. I now actually like the feeling of having an empty stomach rather than feeling stuffed.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

WOW, how did you lose 168 lbs in 1 year?  That's terrific.  There's hope for me yet.  I need to lose 100 more lbs.  What's your secret...what did you do to be so successful after RNY surgery?  It's so encouraging to see that amount of weight loss in 1 year since surgery.  Any secrets, tips or recommendations you can offer?  I'd love to be to my target weight of around 140lbs or so in a year.  I hope I can do it.  I've almost lost about 30 lbs since surgery on 3/2.

Thanks,
Donna

Pre-op one of my issues was "boredom eating"..... which I've confirmed since I'm laid up and recuperating from back surgery. Been eating the house down.

But Hunger? Nope, I rarely feel hungry, never like before my surgery. I eat because I'm supposed to eat, and most days when I'm working and stuff, I have to struggle to get 1100 calories in because I'm just not hungry. If I don't "work it" I usually get about 700 calories in.

With nothing to do right now but eat, drink, take meds and ponder the universe, I'm eating more than I should.

I should add that even the "hunger" I feel now didn't come bac****il six months, and not consistently until 9 months out. When I don't eat I get kind of "silly in the head" (probably hypoglycemia) and there's this "emptiness" like it has to be filled.

But it's nothing like hunger pre-op

Not for most people, no.  I got hungry again after about three months.  I just get full a lot faster than I used to.
