Has any one suffered from Depression after Gastric Bypass?
Hello I had my RNY on February 28th 2011. I have been very grouchy and down since i've had it. The truth is i am loosing my weight fast and could have never done it on my own but I miss eating! I feel as if i take a sip here and a sip there and its not satisfying unless i can pick up a glass of water or whatever and just drink it. I know this sounds so dumb to others but am i alone on this feeling?
Your body has been fairly traumatized; you endured anaesthesia which is an additional trauma; and you've gone through a major lifestyle change, virtually overnight. It is NORMAL to feel sad, down, or just plain blue after surgery.
Mostly it passes -- but if you are concerned or if you feel you are much sadder or depressed than usual, you should speak with a physician.
Hey!! Dr.Naziri was also my surgeron and I'm only 6 days ahead of you. I think just reminding myself that this inability to eat is only temporary. Progressing through the diet changes has made it easier as well. Have you tried taking larger sips of water?
Don't be ashamed or hesitate to talk to someone about how you're feeling.
Feel better and don't hesitate to msg me if you want. :)
It is extremely common for people to feel depressed after WLS. there are actually studies that show that depression, risk of suicide, and drug and alcohol abuse are statistically significantly higher (though not in any way the majority) with post-WLS patients.
Many of us used food as a primary coping mechanism and don't know how to build new ones. Some of us feel alone and freakish and isolated. Some of us transfer food addiction to other self abuse behaviours. Most of us (I'm thinking women here, not sure how it works for men) are constantly flooded with an elevated hormonal imbalance for the first six months or so as rapid weight loss releases estrogen stored in the fat.
You have to challenge the way you think and find new ways of expressing yourself, soothe yourself, dig in to understanding the things that really drive your need, and the desire to consume. Invest deeply into it and you will discover a whole new side of yourself.
If you feel at risk, definitely reach out to your WLS care team, talk about it with your support system or begin a relationship with a therapist.
Hope things improve for you,
~Mo
