reactive hypoglycemia question

Most of the time I can control it by limiting carbs and by eating every few hours.  Sometimes I either eat the wrong things or my blood sugar drops real low for reasons I can't identify.

Most of the time, I eat something with some sugar, often a few ounces of juice, followed by something with protein, like a piece of cheese.  Today, my blood glucose was 61, so not that lowest it's every been (that was 41, I think) but low enough for me to feel crappy.  I had four ounces of OJ and ate a protein bar with one additional gram sugar and 10 grams protein.

I waited 20 minutes, then tested my blood sugar again.  It was 71.  So better, but not that much of a change and I was feeling a little better but not that much better.

My question is, why does it sometimes go up to 100 or 120 when I eat the juice and protein and other times only goes up to 71?  Once it only went up to 64 after eating!

I asked my PCP and she had no clue. She gave me a helpful handout on what to eat when you have hypoglycemia, which was basically what I already eat.  But how do I manage it when this happens?  I feel  like crap.  What else can I do?

My thoughts on this, as I've been reading up on it.

our bodies are producing too much insulin..... so sometimes for some reason it might, say produce bundlse of insulin after we eat

Eat carbs and the pancreas says "Insulin Need, red alert" adn sends out ten bundles of insulin into the system, even though really only four bundles are needeed. The other six bundles are goign to wander around wanting to convert blood sugar to energy, and will do it, even though it's a bad plan.

So we catch it in time, adn we have some carbs and protein and if we have enough, the insulin bundles are all satisfied and used up, but if our initial output of insulin bundles is high, then even when we consume the extra stuff, there are insulin bundles droppping our blood sugar down.

So it's partly a bit to do with the amount of insulin our body initially released with the meal that started it all, and partly to do with how much we consume to correct matters.

And our system is pretty dumb, so it over reacts to everything

Well, I'm sure my system is dumb.  But if this is the case, how do you know what to do when you have a huge drop in sugar?

I've had time to think about it because it seems my eating pattern right now is NOT good and I'm getting what seems to be low blood sugar a lot. I bought a glucometer today to see how it is.

I'd analyze the glycemic index of the foods that set you off in the first place, to try to eliminate the higher glycemic index foods that might be sending the most desperate messages to your pancreas.

I can't find the answer to your question personally.  Best treatment I've found is prevention by doing just what you've said you do - eat frequently and watch carbs.  Just to let you know you're not alone in your question.

Looking forward to reading other's answers.

Kelly,

My GP suggested a complex carb, with peanut butter when I get woozy...and some milk. She suggested to stay away from juice because it can raise it then drop it again~
So, I have tried it and seems to work the few times I have crashed. I also went back to having a protein shake in the morning to get my glucose up first thing. I noticed the crashes were happening when I did not start the day with something~

I use Smart Balance Peanut Butter &
The complex carb I use is the thin bun or rye Wasa

I hope this helps you a bit. I know it gets tricky and how you feel~

Maybe I'll try that.  I actually don't like peanut butter but I imagine any nut butter would work, right?  Usually the juice followed immediately by protein works for me but a couple times it has not so I'd sure like to find something more reliable to treat it when it happens.

Most peanut butters make me dump, so I just eat peanuts or other nuts.

I love it so much; I do not know what I would do without my PB.
I have always been a PB nut!
I have lately started to carry sunflower kernels and golden raisins in case I need a protein/fruit/fiber pick me up.
Sunflower kernels are 28carbs/23protein
How are you feeling?
Hope you are doing better with the pain~
Happy Weekend~

sunflower kernels were one of my "foods" preop but I haven't gotten back into them postop Lots of other nuts though

The pain isn't as bad, it's now fully controlled and I'm taking half or less than half the amount of pain meds I was taking in teh beginning. Taht's a good thing.

My RH (if I have it?) has been weird..... I get light headed, woozy, nauseous, heart racing, sweating for no apparant reason and I am pretty sure it's the RH so today I went out and invested in a glucose monitor. tested it when I was pretty sure all was well and got a 103. Even poked myself

I'm looking forward to resuming regular life. But also a bit scared because even a half hour jaunt today knocked me out for four hours! Good thing I have another week off!
