2 wks post-op and scared
I am struggling so much with the full liquid diet. I'm not getting enough protein daily and am gagging even at the thought of more protein drinks. I have added yogurt, cottage cheese and even buttermilk (not sure if that one was okay or not, but I'm tolerating it well) in an attempt to get up the protein. Now to what scares me, if I can't do this part well, how will I ever be able to do what it takes to maintain weight loss? I keep persevering each day, I feel like cheating, but I don't. I ask myself this hard question when I don't want to face another protein drink, sometimes it works to get me to drink one more, sometimes it doesn't. I just hope I didn't do all this for nothing! I'm not afraid of the surgery failing me, but of me failing the surgery.
is it the flavor? or just any/all liquids that are difficult?
I do my protein shakes in a sports bottle so I don't SMELL them (they smell lousy) and use water and crystal light and fruity flavored protein mixes..... the flavor isn't optimum, but diluting it with 20 oz liquid makes it less thick, and with the water/crystal light it tastes better. I found all protein shakes nauseating with milk..... just something about it was awful to me
it's difficult in the beginning. For many protein shakes are never anything more than "medicine" that is difficult to choke down.
If nothing else this is a great incentive for you, when you get to solids, to maximize your protein intake so as to eliminate the shakes as soon as possible.
The further out you are the moer you can add to your protein shakes to help you out.
I've recently discovered Fage yoghurt, with splenda and berries, it's my new favorite food@

I SWEAR by this type of bottle for my protein shakes:

In the beginning I woudl even hold my breath while mixing it until it was in the bottle so I wouldn't have to smell it at all......stuff smells like vomit~
but once it's in the bottle, I can't smell it and it's all about drinking and not about smelling.... yay!

You're so early out! Don't stress. :) Right now the most important thing is to make sure you get enough fluids each day, and take all your vitamins and supplements, the rest will fall in to place as you go. Buttermilk is very high in fat and calories, it does have a lot of protein, but I would stay away from it. Not everyone here lives on protein powders, or continues to use them down the road, and still get enough protein no problem. It will be much easier once you're on solid foods and can start eating meat and beans, stuff like that. But, what you can do is drink fat free milk with dry milk added to it, it won't change the taste or texture, but it will double the protein. It will still be fat free, but you'll get 16g of protein in 8oz. You can also add dry milk to soups, pudding, yogurt, mashed potatoes, stuff like that too. Don't worry, we all have our hurdles to jump- and I could not tolerate any protein powders, tried everything, mixed it with everything, but I get my protein no problem, just from other sources, and my labs are great, and I've lost 92 pounds in just over 4 months. So, give yourself a break, take it one day at a time, and you will be fine. :)
