Losing my job today .... surgery on Wednesday
If your insurance is through work and you are covered and approved for that surgery I would go for it. You may not be as lucky with your next job and your insurance may have a WLS exclusion to it. Not only that, you will need time off for surgery and you may not be able to get that for another year or so depending on a job.

I SAY GO FOR IT!!!
HECK, YOUR LOSING YOUR JOB SO WHY NOT USE UP THE INSURANCE YOU HAVE EARNED?! THOSE FOCKERS! WHEN THEY SEE THAT BILL..... THE JOKE IS GOING TO BE ON THEM! I'M JUST SAYING!
ON ANOTHER NOTE, I'M SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR JOB BUT YOU CAN TAKE THIS TIME TO REST AND HEAL. GOOD LUCK WITH WHAT EVER DECISION YOU DECIDE ON!

I hope you decide to go for it. You're a very beautiful person based on your avatar, so I wouldn't do it out of fear of being discriminated against, but because this is your time. If you go in and have any of the most serious complications, they'll also be covered under your insurance also, because most of the most costly problems happen within the first six weeks (but don't put off anything that might be wrong!)
Only you know your financial situation, and only you know if you could do it. Really truly..... but you may never get another chance.

Something else to think about besides just the insurance situation is the costs involved in living your life as a WLS patient. Remember you'll NEED to budget enough money for vitamins and protein supplements and that's not something you can do without if there's not enough money coming in later. The economy is tough these days and I know some people who are unemployed for long stretches of time and are just barely scraping by .... so you have to take those added costs into consideration when you're deciding.

I'm very curious as to why you would have been let go just 2 days before surgery. Did they know you were having surgery Wednesday? Some might say that in itself could be a termination in retaliation for being off work for surgery. Can your Dr. put you on disability as of today? That way you don't have to file unemployment yet (unemployment generally pays less than disability). And in order to get unemployment benefits, you have to be available to work. So you would probably not even qualify for a chec****il after you were released back to work. I would have your Dr. put you on disability for as many weeks as he will allow (many will write you off for up to 6 or 8 weeks) and THEN file unemployment when you are released for work. Also, you generally have about 45 days after termination to elect COBRA and then another 45 days to pay for it. In the meantime, you may have found a new job before that first 45 days is up. Just something to think about.
