Major Help Needed! What to take?

So as some may know, last week Monday I had to have a hysterectomy with interior & posterior reconstruction. For all of last week I have been taking oxycodone-acetaminophen (percocet) for pain and to reduce swelling. I am real nervous of taking this as it is an NSAID. Now that the pain in tolerated without the use of a hardcore med, I still have swelling which in turn is causing the pain.  Does anyone know of an over the counter med that I can take that reduces swelling & pain that isn't an NSAID?? I have been nervous all week taking what I have and I really don't want to continue this. The nurses at the hospital said to take Motrin but that too is an NSAID and when I asked them about RNY patients and the effects of Motrin, they were literally clueless that bariatric patients shouldn't be taking NSAID. That really makes me feel great! Anyways, if anyone knows of something that I can take that will help, please let me know! Thanks so much! Oh, and I can't call the bariatric center and ask because they recently decided they are no longer in service and went out of business.

oxycodone/percocet is not an nsaid..............I take 8 per day for a long time for chronic pain.  The Motrin is and should not be taken by us.  The acetaminophen is just tylenol and you can take that too.

Thanks for clearing that up.  First look, I was kinda freaked out because that's what my surgeon gave me after gall bladder surgery and he's also my gastric bypass surgeon, too.

OMG! I'm SO glad to hear that! I asked the nurses at the hospital if it was and like the dingbats they tend to be I got the old "I think so, but I'm not sure. I'll ask ......." and it was a continueing thing until one of them finally said, "yeah, but it's ok for you to take because your doctor prescribed it to you" idiots! Thanks so much! I think I'll just continue with it then! I've been so worried!

Nothing OTC.  If you really need something, you can do a short course of steroids, but those are prescription only.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

If you are really having problems with swelling. Talk to your hyster surgeon's office tell them you absolutely cannot take the Motrin and need to come in and get a shot of Toradol. It is a long acting NSAID in injectable form that will not give you any problems with your pouch. That is a lot less hard on your system than steroids. You can look up any medication by doing a search for it online and see if it is an NSAID.  Good luck1
