So what's the deal with greek yogurt?

For some reason greek yogurt is one of the only things I can stomach to eat in the mornings. I usually add a little bit of splenda to it along with some sugar free preserves. I especially love apricot and peach ones. I tried jello and crystal light packets but I can never get the ratio of adding them right. I also use greek yogurt a LOT in place of sour cream. It adds protein and tastes great. I use it a lot in soups, chili, and refried beans. Even on eggs. :)

I really like Greek yogurt, but so far the Chiobani brand tastes the best to me but it is harder to find in my area. If you want a yogurt that has a similar amount of protein try and find the Carbmaster yogurt, they have quite a few flavors now and they taste really good, they are Kroger brand here in Texas but you can find them at other stores like Bakers or Dillons in other states (stores that Kroger owns). They are usually in the same section as the light or custard style yogurts, but they may be near Greek varieties depending on the store. :)

Thanks, we have Krogers in NC. The chobani company sent me some coupons to get some good discounts but I've only found one Food Lion (our big grocery chain) that is 1 hour away that has them! Now that I know Krogers has them......game on!!! Thanks so much, for complimenting my dog! His name is Earl, he knows he's my favorite. Dave, is his little boxer brother. My dogs are the way to my heart. Thanks again!!

I've become a Fage-aholic

I get the 2% Fage, add splenda and frozen/thawed berries, and super yum

I've been eating it like two times a day lately..... so yummy

Thanks LL, I think I'm now convinced from you all that there are ways to "doctor" it up. I love the greek yogurt that I have been eating though. If I tolerate the Oikos, that has 19 sugars, is that o.k.? the calories, carbs, and stuff isnt that bad. I dont dare test dumping for the hell of it, but I know I'm good with that particular brand, so will I be making a mistake to keep eating it?

I would say that if there is added sugar (if any sugar names are in the ingredient list) you're getting in empty calories.... so I'd check the ingredient list carefully..... there are about ten different names for sugar out there also. Seems like 19 g of sugar MUST have added sugar, and that's just not calories you need right now.

I just bought and tried the Chobani Champions, they are 3.5 oz cups of berry flavored greek yogurt, basically marketed to kids. But, they're pretty tasty and I didn't find the stats to be too horrible either.

Cal: 100
Fat: 1.5g
Carbs: 12g
Sugars: 11g
Protein: 8g

Some of the sugar is natural, but it does have evaporated cane juice in the ingredients. Though I've found that so long as the sugar isn't one of the first 5 things listed I tend to tolerate it.

My issue with the larger Chobani yogurts with the fruit is that if you look at the ingrediants they mix sugar into the fruit and that worries me in regards to dumping.

I LOVE Greek Yogurt! One of my favorite brands to use is the plain Oikos. I really enjoy making Taziki sauce with it. You can find tons of recipes online but here is my basic one:

one individual plain Oikos (15 grams protein!!)
fresh parsley and dill (chopped very very fine)
half of a cucumber seeds, peeled, and diced very finely
one clove garlic minced
salt and pepper

mix all ingredients to taste.

I love it so much I will eat it with a spoon. I like to eat raw turnip with it as well and of course pita bread/chips taste great but those are a no no now.

Another thing I do is put the plain greek yogurt in a blender with some unflavored protien powder and Torani sugar free syrups and just a dash of water and sometimes a little ice. I like to pair the Strawberry and Mango sugar free syrups myself for a very very high protien smoothie that is super low on calories and tastes delicious! I have not tried since I can eat the plain just fine but you could probably add just the SF Torani syrups to change up the flavors.

Take a plain greek yogurt and a fruit flavored greek yogurt side-by-side and compare ingredients.  The plain greek yogurt has natural sugar from the milk and the fruit varieties have milk sugar and ADDED sugar.  The added sugar is empty calories (even honey is sugar) and I would stay away from it.

I add SF syrups, sf boxed instant puddings, whey isolate protein powder (BSN cinnamon bun is my favorite with SF brown sugar cinnamon syrup and SF caramel syrup with cinnamon added), add fresh fruits, sf jams and jellies.  Top with Fiber One cereal for some fiber.  You can use greek yogurt in a protein shake.

Use plain greek yogurt in dips and in place of sour cream.

O% Fage is my favorite.  I also like Brown Cow plain greek yogurt.
