2 weeks after surgery my surgeon released me to return to working out at Curves (I just promised him I wouldn't push myself too hard).  However, I had a relatively pain-free recovery other than gas pains.  I think my experience is unusual.

I had problems after I got home, but my hospital stay was awesome.  No pain out of the norm.  When I got home, though, the pain meds I was given made me nauseas, so I just didn't take anything.  That was a mistake driven by my stubborness, but I was good by week 2.  All I've tried so far is walking.  I've heard great things about Curves, though.  Continued good luck to you!

I've been doing exercise since the doc gave the go-ahead, which was pretty soon after surgery, and I've found it to be really helpful in every respect - both weight loss and recovery. Yes, one does get occasional pain or tightness. Just be sure to tell the surgeon about it; most likely it's normal/

And wow, 33 lbs is a lot in the first month (though I did 32 myself, I see from my records).

Yeah, I started walking the week after surgery, but could only manage 1/4 mile.  Now I can do a mile and a half, but by that 6th lap, I'm pretty much hating it!  I'll for sure let him know that he's still a pain in my side...lol.  Thanks~
