seriously, why can't docs understand the NSAIDS thing?

My plan is just to tell them I am flat out allergic.
Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f*ckin' perfect.

I did.  But they asked what happened if I took them.  Like, I am allergic to penicillan and it gives me hives.  So I ended up having to explain the whole RNY thing.

I too have had to go with the "allergy" route. During my recent hospitalization it really helped. Only one nurse asked me what happened if I took it, so I told her the real deal. She agreed that it was the best way to handle it.

I think now I'm gonna look up what actually happens if you are allergic to them and just say that from now on.

Some of us are able to take Nsaids after wls. My surgeon allows it - with some guidelines to follow and I've taken Advil for 8 yrs now. I use it sparingly, and take the gel caps as a rule as they're easier on our pouches. Many surgeons have relaxed the no nsaids rule for us post ops when the gel forms came out. Many post ops have chronic pain/inflammation issues that need the anti inflammatory properties that Advil or other nsaids provide. I've never had a problem, and I do take them with food as my doc suggests - always on a full stomach and only for short periods of time. I know many other post ops who opt for nsaids (in moderation) as they can't take Tylenol because of the liver issues. I know nsaids in iv form aren't sitting on our pouches and possibly causing ulcer symptoms so I would find that acceptable even if you don't want to take them in pill form. I am always asked if I've had or currently have an ulcer or have ever been treated for one when I'm told to take Nsaids. Just my two cents- for some of us we can and do take Advil or other products and do just fine.

I know you feel comfortable taking them.  But my surgeon strongly advises against using them at all and I've decided to follow her recommendation with regard to that, not yours.

YOu would think with the hundreds of thousands of people getting this surgery Doctors would know, but they don't when I was allergic to Garnier Under Eye Roller ball, it looked like someone hit my eyes with a bat, I went to urgent care.  I told him I couldnt have steroids, so he said "go home and wait it out".  I called my surgeon and he said, "it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that all you needed was a topical cortisone cream" and that is what I went out and bought.  IT took longer to heal because it wasnt a perscription, but it healed.

NSAIDS and steroids are not the same thing, though.  It's NSAIDS we can't have.  We can do steroids.
