Lyrica and RNY

I had RNY a month ago yesterday and I am now being put on Lyrica. I am grateful that someone has listened to my concerns about fibro and finally totally agreed with me, but I am soooo scared of gaining weight. Has anybody been on Lyrica when you got your RNY or did you get your RNY and get put on it not too long after your surgery? Like within a year? How did it affect your weight loss, if it did at all? My pain management doc says that it is not the Lyrica itself that makes you gain weight, it the fact that Lyrica increases your appetite, so you eat more, so ulimately the choice is yours. Which makes sense. It was the principal with my Seroquel..the side effect was weight gain. I ate, a lot, and then a lot more, so I gained weight. I already go to the Fibro board but its not as active as it used to be. Any help would be great

I don't know what to say. Most foods that increase appetite in others decreases mine (and uppers knock me out, and pain pills are uppers, and Aleve is the best sleep aid for me, and steroids take away my appetite..... I'm all full of contradictions!)..... so it's hard for me to say.

However I am hopeful for your sake that the "hunger" thing is defeated by the RNY thing!

*hugs*

Yeah, I get ya'. With me it's Benedryl. The active ingredient in it is diphenhydromine which is the anti-histamine that is supposed to knock you out. I found out a billion years ago that Benedryl makes me hyper instead of sleepy. I to find out the hard way that the active sleep ingredient in all the Tylenol PM, Motrin PM, Advil PM, almost every medicine that says its a sleep aid and it's OTC is diphenhydromine. About 8 years ago I had a bout with insomnia. I couldn't sleep, so I bought a sleep aid. Didnt work, so I bought a different oneetc. I finally decided to take about triple the dose to see if it worked..I was jacked up so much, I didnt sleep for 48 hours! The other is, any opiate, benzo, etc make me feel wide awake and calm. I never fall asleep, I just think I can do anything and no anxiety! I swear I was trying to make this short! I dont know how I end up so dang long-winded!!!Sorry.....

shoulda warned you my long-windedness is catchy

Lately I've been trying for conciseness but the only way I can do that is by posting a single smiley

I've been on Lyrica for several years.  When I was first on it, I gained a lot of weight, but then I stabilized and eventually lost some of the weight I had gained.  I had RNY about a month ago, and was on Lyrica at the time.  It doesn't seem to have negatively impacted my weight loss.  I've lost 25 pounds as of today.  Lyrica made a huge difference, for the better, in my life.  I hope it does yours too.

Pre op I was on several meds that made me gain weight. I was taking seroquel post op and never had issues with weight gain with it. I took it before bed, occasionally I would get hungry but I chose not to eat. I just drank a bunch of water or had a protein shake. Lyrica can cause increased appetite but it really is up to you whether you eat or not. Everyone reacts differently to meds but. I haven't had any weight gain from these meds post op!

What you first two posters posted about not being able to sleep with a sleep aid, getting hyper, taking something to speed you up actually slowed you down.  Do you know this is how people with ADHD react to medications?  Yes Adults can have it too.  I'd mention it to my doctor and see what he has to say about  it.

I wasnt aware that was concurrent with ADHD. That is really good information to know but, if there's one thing out of the, about 15, that isnt wrong is ADHD. If the meds are a symptom then that's the only one I have! Thanks though.

I would really like to try Lyrica, I have such tender pressure points, and my sister is diagnosed with Fibro so suspect I may have it too. Question-my reading indicated Lyrica is kind of a time-relaese med, so how does that work with the pouch? And what other side effects have folks encountered?  Thanks!

I had my RNY on April 12, 2010 and was put on Lyrica 7 months later (November 2010).  I did not notice an increase in my appetite at all, but I did gain 8 lbs over the next 4 months!  I finally got so frustrated and didn't feel it gave me enough benefits to outweigh the weight gain, so I stopped taking it the beginning of March and am now back down 7 lbs!  I have been sooooo frustrated gaining and stalling for long.  I do have to say it really helped the neuropathy in my feet, but not my body pain from my fibromyalgia.  Let me know what you decide to do!  I would love to keep in touch with you!  Can't have enough support with this frustrating condition. . .so many people just don't seem to understand. . .even the doctors!  The only thing I am on now is Tramadol - I take 2 50mg pills 3x daily.  I was sooooo hoping to get off of this and wanted the Lyrica to be my "magic" pill.  8o(
