Ulcers in remnant stomach?
I'm 5 1/2 years out post-op my original RNY. I've had 2 diagnosed ulcers since surgery. My first ulcer I was scoped, they found it and treated it with nexium and carafate and it went away after 6-8 weeks. My second ulcer I had for 6 months, they scoped and medicated me, and nothing fixed it. I had to have an RNY-revision to surgically remove the ulcer in the anastimosis. I now have the same symptoms as the first 2 ulcers, except they couldn't find anything from the scope. They said everything looks perfect. I've been on Prilosec or Protonix for 12 weeks with no effect. They've done an EGD and CT with contrast and the doctor says I'm fine. He can't figure out why I'm hurting. I think that it's a problem in the remnant stomach which I believe there are no tests out there that can detect problems with it specifically? He wants to do an upper GI with small bowel series, but it's likely he won't see anything again, because the barium won't touch the remnant stomach. It seems like he doesn't want to go in surgically again. I've had blood tests done and they appear normal also. Any suggestions or opinions?

Unfortunately, that remnant stomach is completely "blind" unless they go into it surgically. I would think, though, that 12 weeks on the PPIs would help an ulcer in the remnant stomach. Wish I had more to offer... I sure hope you feel better soon.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Will just share my experience...Take it with a grain of salt. I had a heart attack 2 years post RNY. The doctor put me on Plavix. When I started taking it I developed a great deal of pain. The doctors couldn't figure what it was...but I think the medication was irritating my remnant stomach. The pain cleared up after a few weeks...I pressed on for my heart's sake. I still try to take a daily aspirin for my heart...Even thought it's a no no post RNY. The funny thing is that once in a while when I pull or strain a muscle I will take an Ibuprofen...Just 1 for the swelling (yeah, I know). The strange thing is that when I take the Ibuprofen I can feel my old stomach...so I know there is some irritation going on there...
Hi,
I've just seen your post from April and wonder how you're doing now. I'm almost exactly 5 years post RNY and my Dr. believes I may have an ulcer, too. I've quit seeing the Surgeon who performed my bypass and am not sure this Gastro. knows just what to do. I'm not sure if I should find another Surgeon who performs the bypass, or keep seeing a Gastro. The burning has really gotten bad.

I went to a teaching hospital. They put me on a double dose of protonix (40mg twice a day) and after 6 weeks I was feeling better. I"m not sure if it's because of the double dose of the protonix or what. They think I have adhesions or scar tissue that is making my intestines kink. I have the pain when they kink up and the pain goes away when I unkink. I've been feeling better for the past 4-5 weeks with no flare ups. I'm counting my blessings.

I am almost 1 1/2 years out and we believe I have an ulcer in my remanant stomach. I take a PIP everyday but whenever I go off or have to take prednisone I get that intense pain again, it's been 1/2 year since the original pain started despite PIP so I am wondering if anyone else has had an ulcer that long despite treatment?
