exercise and calories?

I'm a recent post-op (6 weeks out).  Until last week I'd been putting off starting exercise.  I generally hate exercise for the sake of exercise.
Last week I had my 6 week check up and the exercise physiologist really kicked my ass for not doing it.  And I hadn't lost any weight in a couple weeks so I started on Friday with the exercise.

She wants me to work up to 60 minutes of cardio a day then later add in some weight training.  I've always been an active person and while I am very heavy, I was in fairly good shape.  Right now I can't do 60 minutes of cardio at once so I broke it into two 30 minute sessions.  I also can't go really fast but I'm getting in more than 2 miles a day.  I am doing intervals as I can.

My eating plan is very strick.  I'm to eat 400-600 calories a day.  I wanted to up my protein so I've quit eating anything but chicken/turkey/fish and greek yogurt.  I'm also not allowed protein shakes.  I'm averaging 500 calories and 73g of protein a day.

I'm not sore or anything but I am tired.  Is this just something I'll have to get used to or am I really hurting myself exercising like this on so few calories?  I had pretty much gotten my energy back before I started walking.  I have to admit that I'm not sleeping very well right now either so that may be part of my fatigue.  I do take my vitamins as I'm supposed to.

Thanks!!

I am 11 weeks out and I am not on a calorie plan. I am just supposed to eat 4-6 times a day no more than 4 oz. I average 700-800 cals a day. I started doing 45 minutes of Zumba a day a little over a week ago and I noticed that I was hungry more often. Once I added another 100 calories a day (a cup of milk) I noticed I was a little happier and not so tired. I have also dropped 7 pounds since I started Zumba.

Thanks!  Are you doing the Zumba at home?  I'm so not ready to expose myself in public, lol.

I sure am. I am fine with looking like an idiot in my own livingroom. I might get brave enough to take a class in a few weeks. I am joining a gym on Thursday and I know they have a class that my cousin loves but I am still cautious about doing it in public. It took me a week and there are still a couple of moves that I don't have down but I am much better at it now than when I started.

Personally I would maybe add a protein shake in there. Usually they don't allow them because they want you to get all your protein and calories from food not from liquid. However once I started working out my Nut wanted me to increase my calories a bit  (no more than 200) on the days I was working out. She had no problem at that time allowing me to use a protein shake for those additional calories. That just my opinion and experience. Others may have different advice.

Thanks!  I may talk to my NUT.  Do you think I should wait a couple weeks to see if this resolves itself on it's own?

I've got EAS shakes that are 17g protein and 110 calories. ...

I guess that depends on your Nut. When I was early out like you my Nut didn't care about calories it was more getting in the protein. By 3 months out they wanted us to be at 1000 calories and by 6 months out 1200. I really didn't start doing hardcore exercise until I was 7 months out and didn't mention the working out thing until my year check up. It probably wouldn't hurt you now to add one of those shakes in on the days you exercise.

Our bodies burn calories as it is even if we are sedentary.  I do 45 minutes of cardio and about 25 minutes of weight training and an hour before I work out I do drink a protein shake.  One thing I don't want to do is pass out/feel faint.

It is interesting to learn what other WLS programs require.  I read the replies and my NUT is not concerned with my calorie intake just the protein.  If a person follows the protein requirement and eats the right foods (which you are doing) calorie intake is not that over the top.  I get in my 80 grams of protein and my calories range from 650-750 range.

Don't push yourself so hard, the thirty minute intervals are okay.  I started off only being able to walk at a speed of 2.7 now I am up to 3.2.  I am 2 months out and it takes time for our bodies to get used to the idea of exercising and working up the stamina.

When I walk on the treadmill I burn 100 calories every 10 mins. If I did that for 60 mins that would be 600 calories burned... If I was only taking in 400-600 calories, I could not expect my body to function on zero or minus calories.. That would lead to eating my muscle up and potentially more problems. I would take in more when exercising . That's just me though
