Depression and Antidepressants, Post Op

I am five weeks post op.  I take cymbalta and abilify for depression.  The depression was well managed pre-surgery, despite major stressors of losing my parents and other large life stressors.  For the past week I have felt increasingly depressed, it's still relatively mild depression, but having had past suicidal ideation, I am concerned about the possibility of it worsening.  So, I know that I am still grieving the loss of my parents and I know that the surgery itself can trigger emotional havoc.  What I'm concerned about is whether the meds are being absorbed correctly, the cymbalta is a capsule.  Any thoughts or insights that might help me would be appreciated.

We absorb capsules just fine.  Is it an extended release one, though?

The web site says they are delayed release capsules, so I assume that means extended release.  Would it help to take it in pudding or something?

No.  I would ask your doc for a different drug.

I, too, am on cymbalta.  My surgeon advised me to not take a capsule that size until 3 months out...I'm only 6 weeks.  I open the capsule and dump in into my mouth with water.  The only problem I've had with it is making sure that all the granules go down, or it causes ulcerations in my mouth.  Good luck to you, and I am so sorry for you loss.

My surgeon has no concerns about the capsules and I've had no trouble taking them, but the website does say they are delayed release.  Have you had any increase in depressive symptoms?

It's generally not advisable to open extended release capsules like that.

I also have been opening my Cymbalta capsule and swallowing the inside. I have been doing this for over 5 weeks and have not gotten any mouth ulcers. I have very med resistant depression and the Cymbalta and Lamictal(mood stabilizer) combo has been working weel for me for the past year. I now crush my Lamictal and Buspar(anti-anxiety) and dump it all into a medicine cup with my Cymbalta contents and down the hatch!! I had severe reservations about malabsorbtion of meds too, as I have had more than a couple of suicide attempts, one very successful one too. I didnt want my dream of having RNY to come true then my meds not work and try to kill myself again. All this is not to say that in a few months that this may not work, but right now I'm going through, crippling(sp) spinal osteo-arthritis, major clinical depression, anxiety disorder, self-hate issues, and now Fibrmyalgia has surfaced and can barely walk...I'm 32. If my meds were not working then I'd be long dead by now!! You might want to crush your Abilify, it may not be absorbing correctly and that is affecting your Cymbalta effectiveness. Hope you feel better, Good luck!!

I take Lamictal too and it has seriously improved my quality of life.  I went the first 2 weeks after surgery NOT taking it because it tastes SOOO bad.  I finally tried mixing it in a spoonful of sf pudding.  Now I'm building back up to my full dose.  I'm glad to meet somebody else that it works for.

Take care,
