Calcium Citrate question

There is no way for ANYONE here to know whether it is "ok" for you to have been taking a smaller dose of calcium than recommended.  Only your FULL labs can tell you that.  Maybe I'm misinterpreting the question, but it sounds like you are looking for reassurance that short term non-compliance is ok... and no one here can give you that assurance.  You know what you should be doing, so just do you best to do it.  IMO, forgetting occasionally is one thing (I think we ALL do that, to one extent or another) but consistently taking a smaller dose is another thing entirely.

Yikes...My surgeon told me to take 1000 to 1500 a day and that sounds different than what all of you are saying? What is normally recommended? I guess I better do some doublee checking!!!  Thanks!!

no, I'm not looking for reassurance for short term non-compliance.  I'm just wondering if any of you have done this for a short amount of time and had labs back to show it did anything.  Some of you have labs done every few months and it would show that.  After a year out, my surgeon only has his patients do a yearly set of lab work at our surgiversary.   I will have mine done in another 1-2 months, so I can see how my labs are and if anything needs to be adjusted.

Sheesh, I'm sorry I even came on to ask a question about this at all!  I guess that phrase, "No question is ever stupid" doesn't apply to me and this situation huh?

I've always had a good response when I've come on here when I've had a question since surgery and this is the first time I've had people get snotty or question why I did something.  I'm not trying to get reassurance about anything, just wanted to see if other people get forgetful too and if it would do any harm if I did it short term.

I'm going to start to try and be better to get back to taking it 3 times a day.

I was terrible at getting in all my calcium. I was good in the morning and usually in the evening and that was it. I had my Dexa Scan last year and, yes, I have osteoporosis, so I would say it is important.
Now I am very careful about getting in all my doses but it's a little like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

I'm glad that Kelly reminded me of the UpCal D.... I take my normal dose of ccalcium pills, but could never remember to get any other doses in..... vvery bad, but now that I have the upCal D, I add it to my protein shakes and get it gradually throughout the day!

Yay!

I now have to get my second multivitamin dose in'

Should probably splurge on a yummy chewable bariatric one..... those are like candy to me and if I had one around, I wouldn't forget because I would have incentive to eat it.

I have things down to a science now.  I got one of those medicine thingys with 4 slots per day and I fill them up every week and then I take my first dose in the morning, second dose after lunch, third dose after dinner and the last one before bed.  I may be adding another dose of Calcium depending on what my doctor thinks.  I am going to see him next week and find out how he thinks I should treat the osteoporosis and I'm going to ask him if I need more Calcium at that time.

it's a little higher for women on the intake of CC, since we are at more risk for osteoporosis- but I'm pretty sure that RNY patients post op are supposed to get 1800-2000 mg of CC a day. And make sure you drink lots of water to flush out your kidneys when taking such high doses of CC, or you can get kidney stones!!!
