Depo after RNY???
I had my surgery on 3-22...and I have been been bleeding since about a week before surgery. I went to my gyn on Friday and she is doing some test..I know I am going to have to get my hormones straightened out. She suggested depo shots. I took depo for years and it made me gain weight. I gained like 50 lbs the first few months...I am just afraid it will do that to me again but it would be so convenient. I wanted to know what some of you did for birth control or to control hormones after surgery. I do know I don't want an IUD...I already told her no to that...I'm just at a loss here as to what to do to stop this bleeding. I can't take it much longer.

I just had a depo shot last month (mid-March) and have actually LOST weight since then. (I'm over 2 years out) Maybe your body will react differently this time?
Be careful about taking it to stop bleeding though. I specifically got it so that I wouldn't have my period on my week long vacation with just my hubby (tmi, I know), and I didn't have it then, which was about a month ago. But I just got done spotting for the last 10 days
Depo is such a crap shoot - you'll just have to decide which way you want to go and make the best of it; but I wouldn't write it off just because you gained on it pre-op. Our bodies are different now, and your surgery was so recent I really doubt much if anything would make you gain.
You could always try it once and if you weren't comfortable not get the next shot.
Good luck and congrats on your surgery!!! You're life is gonna change SO radically - you won't regret it!!!

I take double birth control pills to stop my bleeding. I had a IUD put in right after the surgery and it made me bleed very heavy for 3 weeks and then a normal bleeding for 1.5 weeks. It took about 1.5 weeks of double birth control pills to finally make me stop bleeding. I also have to take them when I am not taking any other vitamins to ensure that they are absorbed.
Thanks to you all for your input. I will have to see what happens once the testing is all done. My gyn has said that she has other patients who took the depo after having RNY and they did very well. I just don't want anything to stop me from losing this weight. I have so much left to go. I want it off ASAP...lol

I actually went to my OBGYN two weeks ago for a yearly pap. I asked about depo because I was on it for years until I finally got off because I too gained 50+ pounds. He said absolutley NOT. He does not want to see me gain weight and he said getting on the depo could cause it even after RNY. He told me either Mirena (IUD) or continue condoms. I will just continue with condoms since my husband and I want to try for another one in two years. I would ask for a second opinion.
My doctor isn't pushing anything on me. She is just telling me the options. I will know next Monday what is going on. I have PCOS too and she is doing an ultrasound to check on that..She also did blood work. I think we will figure something out. She said we have options so we will see what happens...

I was on depo for the first year post-op. I did not gain but I think the hormones made me even crazier than I was from my rapid weight loss. I was thankful to get off them (boyfriend is "fixed" so no need for birth control)

Thanks...This just really scares me...I don't want to hinder my weightloss. This was such a drastic measure to resort to just to have a depo shot and blow it all to hell. I gues she will have to figure something out or I will just resort to endometrial ablation to take care of the problem permanently. I am 40 and never been able to have kids but kinda thought I might want to try for just one once the weight was gone..it might just be a long stretch for me..

Not to be too personal, but why are you not wanting an IUD? They last 5 years and you can get it taken out wheneaver you want to. If you are already bleeding then it won't hurt being put in because your cervix will already be slightly dialated. That's when mine was done and I didn't even know they did it. I continued to bleed for about 2 weeks, then it gradually tapered off and I have'nt had a period in 7 years!! I love never having to worry about when I'm gonna start or what I wear at what time of the month. The only other time I've ever had spotting was when I had my 2nd one put in!!! It is a very personal decision that you have to be comfortable with because it is your body. I just thought I'd give you my experience with Mirena. I know uncontrollable bleeding is scary! I bled through everything for 3 months after giving birth. I couldn't even go anywhere without it going through onto something! (TMI, but true) Good luck
