Oh those numbers.... hate em .... love em.... if I could only get my students to love numbers as much as we do in this little microcosm.
I agree though.... one should have a goal of health as primary..... secondarily a body image.... look around and say "I would love to have that body" but be sure to pick one comparable. If you have small breasts and choose one with larger (or vica versa) remember that only plastics will fix that. So choose a body height/shape that you think matches what you have hidden under all that flab..... then reach for the goal of what you want others to see when they look at you. You might reach that goal and never know it if you are focused on stupid senseless numbers rather than reality.

I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
No one has a crystal ball. Like the others have said it sounds like your doctor is being conservative. The numbers people like to throw around are that an RNY patient will lose on average, 70% of his/her excess weight. My highest recorded weight was 339, my surgery weight was 311, and now I'm about 140. There are people who have lost more than me and people who have lost a whole lot lot less. Sometimes it seems like a crap shoot. Just control what you can control and try not to obsess over the numbers.

Thank you everyone!!!
I've been doing my best to not obsess over weight. I wish I could just throw the scale out, but at this time I am not able due to insurance requirements and my participation in a program outside the program provided by my clinic. I do so much want it to be about health and overall feelings ... you know, my knees not hurting, my back not hurting, having more energy, not feeling like a suasage, and my trade in list goes on an on and on. I thank you for the reminder about what is really important to me, and what I know is I can't do those things at 285 and if I can at 220 I am good. I plan to follow the rules, deal with my **** and let this new life work for me. Now with that said, I still can't help but hope for 190. I've been there twice with traditional dieting (WW and Low Carb), so it's probably doable with bypass.
