newbie concerns on liquids
I just really hope that this gets easier. I feel like a failure as a human being - we're supposed to drink water and breathe as basic needs and struggling to do those things makes me feel like I've failed somehow.
I meet with my surgeon on Thursday and she'll likely say I'm doing good and healing better than expected, but my perfectionistic tendencies are taking over my brain today....

If you're worried about your liquid intake though I would seriously give room temp liquids a shot and see how that feels.
1) make Crystal Lite popsicles and suck on those all day. Actually, those helped me get my pain meds in too. The liquid pain meds they prescribed me (oxycodone and tylenol) were too thick and sweet and made me throw up. So, my husband mixed them with no sugar added cranberry juice and froze them into ice cube sized popsicles. The bitterness of the juice counteracted the sweetness of the meds and I was able to get them down no problems. Oxypops are pretty much the most awesome thing ever.
2) I started using a straw to drink from bottles. A lot of people say not to use a straw because it can cause you excess gas. For me it caused LESS gas and allowed me to get in the fluids I needed so desperately. I did it with my surgeon's blessing.
3) And finally, I started drinking more HOT liquids. Specifically a LOT of lemon ginger tea because I was constantly nauseous as well. To this day, I'm about 6 weeks out, eating solid foods, and for the most part feeling fine but I still start off the day with a warm mug of lemon ginger tea to settle my stomach.
As long as you don't have anything actually wrong (like a stricture) it WILL geat easier and better. I went over a month before I could drink normally or even felt like a human being again. Now I can swallow normal amounts of liquid and have ditched the straws. I can tolerate normal water as well now, but barely. It still makes my stomach queasy. I hope some of this helps. :)

However, your esophagus should not be swollen because they didn't operate on that.
