newbie concerns on liquids

I know this is probably going to get a few flames but I'm gonna post anyway b/c I'm having a worry day. I'm 6 days post-op and worried about my system. My theory of why it feels like I have lead in my esophagus every time I drink liquids (and doing it anyway b/c I don't want to be back in the hospital) is that my organs are still swollen from surgery and so maybe everything is just tighter  but will eventually go down to my new normal and it won't always be so difficult to drink liquids. I pace myself as much as I can. I have a routine today of take a sip, wait 30 sec, do a breath on my incentive spirometer, take another sip, wait 30 sec, take another sip, walk. I'm probably doing more gas-x than prudent but trying to do everything to keep liquids moving. I'm doing a bit better on protein by freezing it and eating it in little bites every hour or so.
I just really hope that this gets easier. I feel like a failure as a human being - we're supposed to drink water and breathe as basic needs and struggling to do those things makes me feel like I've failed somehow.
I meet with my surgeon on Thursday and she'll likely say I'm doing good and healing better than expected, but my perfectionistic tendencies are taking over my brain today....

You are being hard on yourself and things do get easier. Are you drinking cold water? Sometimes not so cold water is easier to get down.

You haven't failed!! Just keep on walking and drinking!

For the first few days water felt like a brick sitting in my stomach.  I noticed if I drink it room temp it feels so much better going down.  Maybe give that a shot?  Ice cold water seems to be harder on my new pouch than room temp water.  The things I've been keeping down easily are room temp water, unsweetened tea and room temp Crystal Light.  My protein needs to be cold for me to keep it down so I've been doing chocolate pudding mousse with the chocolate and italian ices with the fruit flavors.  So far so good.

If you're worried about your liquid intake though I would seriously give room temp liquids a shot and see how that feels.

Like others, just swallowing cold liquids was really hard for me. I struggled to get my water in and ended up in the hospital dehydrated. The things that worked to fix this for me were to

1) make Crystal Lite popsicles and suck on those all day. Actually, those helped me get my pain meds in too. The liquid pain meds they prescribed me (oxycodone and tylenol) were too thick and sweet and made me throw up. So, my husband mixed them with no sugar added cranberry juice and froze them into ice cube sized popsicles. The bitterness of the juice counteracted the sweetness of the meds and I was able to get them down no problems. Oxypops are pretty much the most awesome thing ever.

2) I started using a straw to drink from bottles. A lot of people say not to use a straw because it can cause you excess gas. For me it caused LESS gas and allowed me to get in the fluids I needed so desperately. I did it with my surgeon's blessing.

3) And finally, I started drinking more HOT liquids. Specifically a LOT of lemon ginger tea because I was constantly nauseous as well. To this day, I'm about 6 weeks out, eating solid foods, and for the most part feeling fine but I still start off the day with a warm mug of lemon ginger tea to settle my stomach.

As long as you don't have anything actually wrong (like a stricture) it WILL geat easier and better. I went over a month before I could drink normally or even felt like a human being again. Now I can swallow normal amounts of liquid and have ditched the straws. I can tolerate normal water as well now, but barely. It still makes my stomach queasy. I hope some of this helps. :)

Amber, very good suggestions! I like the oxypops idea.... I'm on nystatin and just doing swish & spit instead of swallow b/c it's so sweet that it's gross. I'm gonna do some more ginger tea now.

Been doing room temp and even warm liquids since I started on liquids in the hospital. So, any suggestions after that? I really DO appreciate the support & suggestions though....

OK I want to emphasize how much I REALLY appreciate hearing that this is normal, being so soon out. I have a tendency to be too hard on myself and expect too much. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! Your advice and feedback means the world to me!

I am a newbie as well and am 1 week out.  I was told in the  hospital to limit how cold I make my drinks because the cold liquid causes muscle spasms in the stomach which only adds to your discomfort

Freezing your protein drinks is fine.

However, your esophagus should not be swollen because they didn't operate on that.
