Deciding between VSG or RNY- help

MY concern about the RNy is (don't laugh-lol) the stories I am reading about the yucky gas or dir. for the rest of my life.  Is that real common?  Is there a place on this website that I have not found yet that will compare or tell me the good about the RNY.  I was told recovery was about the same as the VSG then read about people in so much pain a week or so after surgery etc.  I hope someone can help.

Do you eat a lot less having that tiny pouch versus the sleeve?  I want to eventually be able to eat a small sensible meal (child size).

RNY is better if you have any reflux or insulin resistance and I have those so at the last minute I am most likely chaning my mind from VSG to RNY.  I am self pay so I am worried about the cost if I had complication.

Thanks for any help...

I am sure you will get tons of post on RNY vs VSG so i am not going to get into that (seems to always bring some heated discussions)

one thing you should consider also is the costs of the vitamins and minerals you will have to take for the rest of your life with RNY

now with that said i was on 5 shots of insulin a day (2 types Levimir and Novolog) and my numbers were still not good.  I had RNY and since 9/15/10 (the date of my surgery) i have not had to take any insulin or and meds ( my diabetes is in what the Dr's like to call remission) my A1C number last week when i had my labs done was a 4.3 without any type of meds at all.

I personally do not suffer from Diarrhea and at times do get gas.  for me the pain was pretty much during the 3 days i was in the hospital and that's all ( now mind you all people heal different and i have heard of some that had more pain and for longer, (this again is "ONLY" my experience)

I had RNY almost 1 yrs ago. I had an open procedure and was up and walking 3-4 hours after surgery and have been moving ever since, I drove to support group 5 days out. (I wasn't on any pain meds so driving was ok). I never took even as much as a Tylenol when I got home as I wasn't in pain - felt like muscles were pulled. Like I had done a couple hundred sit ups. I had acid reflux and irritable bowel before surgery and both are completely gone now. I have never had gas or diarrhea-unless I ate something really wrong for a post op and that doesn't last very long. Gas is when post ops eat more sugar or carbs than they're allowed and it ferments in their now shortened intestine. Most post ops who follow the food guidelines don't have diarrhea or gas. I eat a regular meal (for me. ) It's bigger than a childs portion and I eat everything I ate before surgery (in moderation). I make better choices now - I'd rather have a cheese stick instead of a bite or two of cheesecake. One bite of chocolate sufices rather than half a bag of
M & M's. It's all in your adjustment after surgery. I want this to wor****ep to the program most of the time, I didn't have this surgery to deprive myself and I don't, I love my life post op and am thankful every single day I had this done and I"m realistic.
It sucks some times when I'm eating a great burger off the grill or steak at a restaurant and I get full before anyone else, but I get to save the meal for later and have it again-sometimes twice. It's cheaper and I don't have to cook a lot cause the leftovers are there if needed. I take a multi-vitamin every day, sublingual B-12 under my tongue and a couple calciums throughout the day and I'm good to go. Bloodwork is fantastic, energy is fantastic and life in general is fantastic.
I spend a lot less on food now and vitamins are like $15-30 per month. No long term complications or problems. Hope this helps - remember some like to complain and you'll read plenty of posts from those that do. Some are genuinely looking for help and support on here but many of us long term posties are out enjoying life, living every day to the fullest and having a blast. Good Luck to you

I had a lapband 11 years ago it caused me nothing but sickness, it took me 10 years to find someone to help me as i moved from australia to canada, finally I found a Dr and had RNY on april 5th this year and it was amazing, i was up right after surgery and home 2 days later, no pain meds needed and just a lil stiffness from them removing the bands port  from the muscle, other than that it was a breeze, I know surgery is different than it was 11 years ago when I had it done but I had more pain with the band than the RNY I wish I had of choosen the RNY then....good luck on whatever you choose
