Just Got Home from Emergency Room...A Little Bathroom TMI

Well, I just got home from the E-room, after 5 hours. I have been constipated off and on, so I started taking Miralax every day and MOM when I need it. Well, I kinda knew yesterday that I was constipated, but didn't take any MOM until this morning and then again this afternoon. And boy I took a whopping dose. This morning I couldn't finish but 2oz of my 4oz greek yogurt brfore I started feeling nauseous. I knew right there, that was a bad sign. About 3:30pm I called my mother to let her know I was going to take a shower then go to the emergency room because I was constipated. I got there and thank goodness there weren't too many people there, and they got me right in. I talked to the doc and he said that what he would normally use he couldn't on me because I'd have to chug about 10oz and I obviously couldn't because of the RNY. So, he decided to take an X-ray to,"see what we're dealing with here." After about an hour the nurse comes in with 4 Dulcolax pills and said the Dr. ordered an enema. O.k. that was fine I figured I'd try it even though I didn't think it would work. She comes in with a bag twice as long as an I.V. bag and about that big around!! I did not realize that hospital enema's were sooo different! I had to lay on my side and hock my right leg up while she pumped my guts full of this liquid, which by the way, she dumped about 3 packets of lube in and shook it up with me standing there!! Things were alright at first but that was alot of fluid goign in there! My stomch starting cramping sooooo bad and oh, it hurt. She got finished and saif to go to the bathroom and hold it for at least 5 min but try for 10min. I asked if there was a clock in the bathroom and she said,  "no, but you'll know." WTH? So I went and after a while of holding it and cleaning up the bathroom to take my mind off, I still didn't know if it was time enough, so I snuck out of the bathroom and went to check the time. It was time, but, I was nervous so I waited longer(the longer the better right?) I finally went and nothing! All that came out was the fluid she put up there. So I guess the doc didn't want to do any "further measures," so they sent me home with 2 Dulcolax twice a day and 60ml of Lactulose twice a day until I went, then back off to once a day to keep this from happening again. I figured when I left I would be at least free of some poop!! Well, I got home and started all the night-time feedings and I thought I had to pee, but then I felt my guts start cramping and I thought I "had to go." I was scared!! I was just going to hold it in 'til tomorrow when i had more meds in me and some more stamina built up....but noooo. OMG it was horrible I broke out in hot sweats and it felt like I was giving birth from somewere else!!! I finally "took care of business," and I had to crank up the A.C.!!! No lie, it was about the size of a baseball!! I guess the little bit of enema that didn't escape helped to soften things up. Moral of the story, especially to newbies, DO NOT think that this can't happen to you, because it can, and probably will!! I thought I'd never get constipated because before I always had loose all the time. Make sure you start a regimen to make sure you "stay going" or believe you me, you'll be hatin' it!!!! I do feel much better now, although I'm sore in place I didn't know could be sore and I think I pulled a shoulder muscle!!!!

LOL :) I'm not laughing at your pain, I'm laughing at the 'I'm sore in places I didn't know I could be".

I'm sorry you went thru all that. Coffee always does the trick for me to keep me regular. But, my docs sugested getting liquid colase and taking it on a regular basis. My surgery is in May, and I got  my colase waiting on the table for me.

Glad you are feeling better!! Isn't it funny.. the relief you can get :)

Miralax, miralax, miralax.  Every. single. day.

I had an experience like what you just described and it terrified me so badly, that I will NEVER allow myself to get constipated again.  The pain was horrific, and I was also in pain and sore for days in places that I never knew I could get sore in!

Now, I take Miralax once a day (in a cup of coffee) and it's all good.

Let me say it one more time.....Miralax.

Yeah, that's what I said I was taking everyday, but I guess it's stopped doing it's job all alone!! So I'm going to have to find another routine to keep me "right!!"

Been there, done that, totally feel your pain! Glad to hear it's close to childbirth--I should be able to go through that no problem! Not for a LONG time though! LOL

oh my goodness...i am right there with you now!!!! except my hemroids are just awful....TMI, i have one about the size of golf ball and another one about the size of a small grape...all just hanging there...who knows whats on the insides....so i cam home with miralex from PCM dr today, and some cream to shrink them...and some suppositroys....but we could not get it inserted...i think too much in the way now..so i am using the cream and some tucks pads..until some of the swelling goes down, i hope it does....i had one dose of the mirelax, and will get more in tomorrow and doing several doses of the benefiber...i also have colace 100mg...dr said i could take 3 of those in a day..but thats it....
my surgeons nurse said i had to get in at least 20-30 of fiber a day...but with out eating any grains and such...that is going to be hard....i hope the benefiber does the trick along with the miralax...
what a shame to have to spend so much time on bathroom issues...
sorry for the TMI but thats the way it is...
have a great day, i sure hope to be able to go soon

I am right there with you.  I went to the ER last month because of similar issues.  It is pure hell.  As a newbie, I definitely did not take the bathroom business seriously enough - I thought I would somehow just be one of the lucky ones who is fine.  Yeah right!  I hope people read your story and heed your warning... seriously.

Glad you are feeling better!
