traveling delta airlines on june 1st...
hello everyone....this is for all your seasoned travelors...i am going to wyoming on june 1st using delta airlines....i plan to have a travel carry on bag and computer bag...i will check my large suitcase....can i take a lunch box with coolie pack with some yogurts, cheese and maybe some lunch meat.... for my trip? i really dont want to eat while at the air port their food i am just 5 weeks out now....so will be just about the 2 month mark but on full foods....i dont do protein drinks anyh longer.... my food plan wants protein from all foods..which is fine with me...
also i have a transit cart.... it is like a walker with a bag, but folds up like an umbrella stroller....i was going to put my carry on bag and computer bag in this bag and use it to push those 2 items..then was going to let them fold it up like umbrella stroller and put where they put the baby strollers and such....was thinking of calling it my walker and i need it to help me walk..
not that i really need it to walk..but the last time i did this trip was well over 4 years ago, and i had a hard time wiht the carry on bag and computer bag, it really hurt my arm to pull it thru the airport....
any help from all you seasoned travelrs would be great... i can count the total number of times i have flown on an airplane, and its not that much...and i am almost 50 years old...
thanks have a great day

you should be fine going through securtiy with all of that. I have never once had issues with food and secuity. and the "walker" should also be no problem at all. it may take you a little longer to get through security with the ice and yogurt but there should be no real security problem with the plan you have
If you have a card from your surgeon stating that you've had gastric bypass, TSA and the airline are supposed to allow you any reasonable accommodations. You're doing great by preparing your dietary accommodations in advance. Maybe call with the airline on what is their policy for walkers - if they really put up a fuss about having to check your walker at the gate, then ask that they have a wheelchair to ferry you thru the airport. My mom flys alot and has had both knees replaced - they often give her grief but doing your due diligence can prevent alot of problems.

If it were me, I would pack all of the stuff you have described in one carry on bag that rolls as not to bother with so much stuff to haul around. I would be concerned that they might confiscate my yogurt so I would probably just skip it and buy it once through security. I enjoy traveling more when I don't have a lot of stuff to worry about. That's just me. A lot of stuff to haul around makes for a miserable trip for me. I just "make do" until I get where I'm going and I enjoy the journey lots more.
However, you may need all you've described for comfort.

Debby,
I am two months today and actually flew Delta from WA to WY last week. I didn't try to take any yogurt or fluids with me, but I did pack an empty protein shaker and a few pack of the Syntrax tea to help get me through the day. I also packed turkey pepperoni to snack on. I checked one big suitcase and put my other non-perishable food in it and then stopped at a grocery store once I landed in Wyoming. I put my "essentials" in a backpack so I didn't have to worry to about pulling anything along.
Don't be afraid to ask for a wheelchair if it makes your trip more enjoyable!!
During an early morning layover on the way home, I was starved but couldn't find any Greek or plain yogurt that didn't have 50g of carbs! So went to Quiznos and asked for the ham and egg sandwich without the bread. They were more than happy to cook it up and put it in a bowl for me, said they do it all the time. I was only able to eat about 1/4 of it, but it was much better than starving or eating something that would make me dump on the plane!!
Happy travels....Amy

Hi Debby
By coolie pack I'm sure you are talking about the packs of gel you freeze- they probably won't let you take that on board. The food should be fine to bring.
If you look around at airports you can usually find yogurt, lunchables and other okay stuff to eat.
Protein bars would also be a good thing to bring along and don't have to be refrigerated.
The cart thing is probably a good idea-
Enjoy your trip!

I have traveled with cool packs before to keep meds and baby foods cold. Just pull them out for inspection. I would have a note from your surgeon stating you are on a special diet and you should be good to go. I have has liquids I forgot about pass through securtity before. Not sure if that is good or not. :)

I have flown many times pre and post bypass and here are my suggestions:
TSA will be very strict on liquids, including yogurt. The limit is 3 oz. containers of liquid maximum (such as a travel shampoo). They can and will confiscate and dispose of items that exceed this regulation. A doctor's note cannot be verified and is not likely to be accepted, except for necessary medications - not likely to give you clearance for yogurt.
You are allowed one carry on and one personal item (such as a purse or your cooler bag). If the cooler bag is small, they probably won't give you any problem. Not sure about the ice pack thingy, but my husband (who travels extensively and then some) thinks it would be a no go.
You will be fine with snacks such as string cheese and lunch meat. Plan to buy a water once you get through security - you WILL "dry out" on the flight and the amount of liquids they provide just isnt enough.
Consider a baggie or two with some pre-measured protein powder. You will have no problem with security on this - and can pick up a skim or 1% milk to mix it during the trip.
Don't panic. You will be able to hit a grocery store or GNC at your destination and get plenty of what you need.
The wheeled carrier may work out for you but be aware that you may have to "gate check" this (as many strollers are checked these days). This means that the cart does not go on board with you, but is checked at the gate. When you disembark, you wait at the jetway where it is brought up to you before you enter the airport at your destination.
And by the way, ALL of your fluids (toiletries, makeup, etc) must be in 3 oz. or smaller containers, and must all fit into a single quart size ziploc bag to clear security.
With a little planning, you'll be fine!
