Any veterans want to fill me in?

I'm not afraid of needles, but in the stomach?  My Goodness!!!!!!

I am 10 days out from surgery and I'm just now finding out about this.
Its like the best kept secret....

Any info would be great!

Thanks!
Tracy

You must mean the lovenox shots.  Its a blood thinner to keep you from getting blood clots.  I am not sure of the protocal on them - I had to start them 5 days b4 surgery because I am on blood thinners for a blood disorder.  To me, a shot in the tummy hurts less then in the arm.

Thank you!

Maybe not everyone gets them??

I've never had a shot in the stomach so I guess its the thought of it that gets to me.
Whatever it is though I will deal with it...

The blood thinner shots... To be honest I was so drugged up so I didnt even care that they were sticking a needle in my stomach. I did have a nice bruise on my stomach a couple of days later from the shots.

You can barely feel these shots.  And just to clarify, they are in the abdomen (not the stomach) and they aim for the biggest part.  They are very tiny short needles.  I just had 3 of the on the days I was in hospital.  Some people start them before.  And I've known people to go home with a 2 week supply.  The worst part about them (in my opinion) is they leave some bruising because they are blood thinners.  My bruising was worse from these, than from my lapro incisions.

They gave lovenox shots right before surgery and the days I was in the hospital, in the stomach. To be honest I didn't even feel a thing, I wouldn't of known they were even doing it if I wasn'****ching.

Hi, I am new and just want to reassure you as others have, that the shots are no big deal.  I had surgery on 4/4/11 and couldn't even remember what shots you were writing about until others defined them.  You might get some bruising from them...I still have a little bit, but they are not bad and are very necessary.

I had them in the hospital and came home and gave them to myself, twice a day for 7 days.    They were not a big deal at all...not fun, but not horrible at all.    The needle is short and very thin, very rarely did I ever have pain.  (I had 14 preloaded syringes, didn't have to measure anything)   The prescription I had came with very thorough instructions and one of my nurses showed me how to do it (and let me do it while she watched) before I was dismissed.

And the ones in the hospital happen so fast, and you are on so many painkillers, that you won't notice them hardly at all!!!

Some people also opt to take the B12 as a shot.

If you're 10 days out and don't have them, don't worry--you won't. But as an FYI--they hurt less in the stomach than the arm or leg--less nerve endings
