Drinking and ROUX EN Y
I am not a big drinker. However do enjoy an occasional glass of wine. Anyone have experience with the effects of alcohol after surgery? Any recommendations on what to drink? My surgeon says that I need to becareful because it will affect me much quicker now. Another question: Does anyone have suggestions on how to get 60 gms of protein a day with a liquid diet? I am suppsoed to have my surgery in the next 30 days and scared I will eat the wrong things. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
Thanks everyone!
i waited until i was 3+ months out before having a glass of wine. and yes you will feel it faster but it clears up faster as well. so thats why its said to becareful. people like the feeling of getting drunk faster and sobering up faster so they keep drinking and so on... i can have about 2 glasses of wine and be good. i have to do it at the end of the day otherwise it replaces a meal and thats not good. (tummy does not like to eat after i drink)

Rule of thumb on the alcohol is not before 1 year out (some say never again) and yes it will affect you a lot harder than you expect. I do not drink, but do have friends that have had RNY & do drink, I am always the safety net, making sure they are safe if we are out in public. Be careful of a cross addiction (going from food to alcohol). Becoming an alcoholic is a very real possibility.
As for your 60g of protein on liquids it should all be in protein shakes. That should get you more than enough. Just follow your nutritionist's (NUTs) plan.
I hope this helps and you will be on the losers bench before you know it.

I didn't have a drin****il about a year out, and then only a sip of my hubbys wine. I've never been a drinker (maybe 2x a year I'd have half a glass or less), but yes, Alcoholism is a HUGE cross-addiction for many RNY'ers.
As for getting in 60 grams of protein, that shouldn't be a problem on a liquid diet. There are several protein supplements available from online, walmart, costco, etc. Just get some to try. Premeir protein at Costco is a ready to drink protein shake and has 30grams of protein in each shake. Or you can get protein powder and use that as well. Walmart has their body fortress protein powder that has 26 (ish, I believe, I don't have one in the kitchen right now so can't double check) grams per scoop. Don't do the protein bullets wrong type of protein you won't absorb it.
