Prilosec after surgery?

It is definitely necessary to take the prilosec or any other PPI after surgery.  3 months actually isn't very long, my feelings and my surgeons also is that they should be taken for atleast a year and some need for life.  You have a newly healing pouch that needs time to heal including the staple line - you don't want any acid on the staple line or a marginal ulcer can occur which is very serious.  You also need the prilosec to prevent reflux, which after time is very rare in RNY patients but at the beginning can occur.  So, please continue taking it and when you get to 3months, ask your surgeon if you can continue it - you will benefit greatly.  You don't want ulcers - they aren't fun.

I'll be on it for a month post op. I was told it was to prevent acid and reflux. They want to make sure there is no reason to vomit so your pouch can heal properly. It's like an open wound in there, it needs gentleness and nothing aggravating it.

There is serious risk of getting ulcers at the point where we get stapled. That is why you were put on the prilosec.

I was given orally disintegrating Prevacid. It was like takinga chewable. Must easier to day. But some insurance companies are known to be finicky about covering it.

I am on 2 prilosec a day and have never had reflux.  My doctor says that it will help prevent strictures and ulcers.  She said I will need it for 3 months then can stop taking it.  I actually take the over the counter generic brand.

I am on Prilosec, which my surgeon told me I could get off of after 3 months.  I did kinda start weaning off of them but did notice I was getting the heartburn back, so I just decided to stay on them.  Better safe then sorry!

I intend to continue taking mine for life, even if I have to go the OTC route. My father was part of the original drug trials so I figure if he's taken it safely for over 20 years now then I oughta be fine for the rest of my life! I've seen the pain he went through with ulcers--no thank you!! I don't want one!

Ok. I really really wish my doc had prescribed prilosec or something similar after surgery. I now have 2 ulcers and have not felt pain like that EVER. I ate my favorite spicy boneless buffalo wing from buffalo wild wings...just one...and ended up going to the ER and had TONS of tests ran. Ended up getting an egd and finding the little buggers. I'm glad I know what is going on, but seriously sucks being a year and a half out and having to change my diet again. I hope you took it all!

I have always had reflux and been on omeprazole 40 mg for years. Had roux-en-y 2.5 mos ago and no reflux since then however I went in for upper endoscopy the other day and had ulcer and mild stenosis of gastrojejunostomy. Gastroenterologist put me back on 20 mg prilosec. Surgeon had told me I didn't need it anymore. Gastroenterologist said not so. If you have a history of gerd, ask alot of questions before letting them take you off it. it seems like the proton pump inhibitors like prilosec are better than other acid reducing medicines for this.

I was on Prilosec for three months.  After that my doctor took me off of it because I never had reflux before or after surgery.
