Removal of GB along with RNY
My insurance will pay for gall bladder removal as prophalaxis along with my RNY which should be coming soon. For those of you who have had both, will it cause more pain or will there be no noticable difference? (I feel silly. After I typed that I realized there's no way to tell since a person can't have a RNY and then a RNY with a GB removal, but I'd love to compare and contrast what you say.)
Thanks,
Danny

I had mine removed at the same time; my "RnY" included a near total gastrectomy at the same time as well so I had that pleasure too. Actually, it wasn't too bad though.
I came on the boards and whined for a few days, but by I think day 5 I wasn't even taking any pain meds (not even tylenol). Compared to my spinal fusion it was a walk in the park.
With all the trouble people have with their gall bladders, I was grateful to have the removal offered at the same time.
Good luck in your journey. =)

I had mine removed at the same time along with two hernia repairs. For me (and everyone is different) it was pretty rough. I've had one C-section and a back surgery so I'm basing it on the pain level of those. I used all of my pain meds and could have used maybe a couple more days of it-just for comfortable sleeping at night. With that said, I'm SO glad I had it removed. Last thing I want to do is head to the OR for more surgery. Use the binder they give you. It helps a lot. Especially when getting up from a chair and walking. I was at the mall with my daughter shopping at week 2. Felt like my old self at around week 4. Within a few weeks you won't even remember the pain :)
You'll be fine! The pain meds are very good and really keep you at a comfortable level. Good luck!

I had mine removed at the same time and, after talking to other people who've had the surgery without the GB removal, I have to say that my pain was probably a bit higher and lasted longer. I know quite a few people who had RNY and were able to stop taking their pain killers when they went home. I was living on mine for about two weeks. I could deal during the day but couldn't sleep without it.
I had my GB removed same time as my RNY, and I had alot of pain after for at least 2 weeks I was in bed. And I like the other poster had a spinal fusion the year prior, so I was comparing the two and it was not even close. I have also had 2 c-sections and they were far worse than RNY. however, because of the unmitigated dumping of bile into my gut I had terrible diarrhea for a full 2 weeks. But it had to go it was full of stones and the doc said it was about to burst!
I wish they'd taken out my gall bladder at the same time of my RNY. It sucked to get used to life post WLS but with incredibly bad side pain. Then 4 months later, I had to go back through the pain of yet another surgery.
Personally, I'd rather go through a little more pain once, then a lot of pain twice.
Good luck,
Emily

With the number of post ops requiring GB removal at a later date, I think removing the gall bladder at time of WLS is a wise move. That's how mine was done...but of course, I was having on/off problems with mine. No "stones"; just "sludge". But still....I'm glad they removed it.
I don't think you will even KNOW they took it out.
good luck.

I had surgery 4 months ago and was in pain for about two weeks (went back to work and school after one but didn't feel good). Monday I had to have my gallbladder out which sucked, more time off work an away from the gym (although it's not nearly as bad as the bypass). I would say just get it done so you don't have to go through it again a few months later!
