First off I want to say thank you for all of your posts and words of encouragement for each other.  It has helped me to make the decision to have WLS.  I've been to see the surgeon and I'm trying to decide which procedure is best for me.  My BMI is 35 but I have health issues and trying to lose the weight I hit a brick wall.     Why did some of you chose RNY over the sleeve?

Your health issues and medications needed should be discussed with your surgeon.  Generally, over 90% of type II diabetics resolve their need for medications, and type I only have to take pilled meds. But, the diabeties is only really in remission. It can return, especially if you have major wt regain.  If you need NSAIDS for fibromyalgia or arthritus, etc., you may elect to have the sleeve.  The RNY can be reversed, buy most surgeon's will only reverse it if you have issues post op that cannot be resolved. I personally have only known 2 RNY post ops who have had to have reversals, and this is out of hundreds of patients.  The sleeve cannot be reversed, but can be revised to a RNY.  So your health issues should be fully discussed with your surgeon.  Make an extensive listing of your questions so that you can fully discuss these issues, and your surgeon can help you decide which surgery is your best option.  DAVE

What I've heard so far about the sleeve is that there's a lot of weight re-gain and that you have to have a lot of self control and stay on a low carb diet for it to be successful. If you look at the "DS" forum you'll see that a LOT of people have their RNY surgeries revised to the DS, so you might want to do some research. Best of luck!

ALOT of people do not re-gain because of the VSG....atleast I have not seen these people in the year I've been on the sight. NONE of the sugeris mal-absorb carbs...so there are RNY, lapband, sleeve AND DS'ers *****gain because of simple carbs. (white flour, sugar, bread, rice pasta) I chose the VSG because I'm young and didn't have a "too high" BMI. I would not suggest the RNY for someone with a low BMI like yourself...I started at a BMI of 39.9 and my surgeon said NO to the RNY. it would be "over-kill" and since I'm so young, he figured the VSG would be must easier to live with. After I did my research I agreed that the VSG is the way to go for me. I did not have a "sweet tooth". I had an everything tooth...everything I ate was 2-3 portion sizes. The VSG has been perfect for me. I lost 115 lbs in 8 months with only 15 more to go. All of my vitamins, minerals AND calories are absorbed from the beginning so vitamin deficiency changes are lower...
The RNY pouch is made of the stretchy part of the stomach...IF YOU CHOOSE to over-eat...it WILL stretch. The VSG sleeve is made of the less stretchy part of the stomach so IF YOU CHOOSE to over-eat, it will also stretch.....NOT AS MUCH AS THE RNY POUCH because of the stomach tissue each new "tummy" is made of. I have seen people with ALL surgery types re-gain....and it was 99% the patients fault...they didn't change their eating habits when they had a chance. Also, I was one of the lucky VSG patients who DID lose their hunger...I have to time myself to eat.

and to grodocs....I noticed you just joined the site yesterday. I hope you do a little more research if "What I've heard so far about the sleeve is that there's a lot of weight re-gain"...is all you have learned.

Thanks for your opinion.  I have also done a lot of research and feel that the RNY would be overkill for me as well.  However, I was curious to see why other people chose RNY over sleeve.   My research says the same thing after the 4 or 5 year mark some weight is regained.  It all depends on the person as to how much.  I have lived a realitively healthy life style so with the extra tool "sleeve" I'm hoping that is all I will need to get back to where I need to be and stay there.

The statistics made it very cut and dried for me:

RNY nets you 70% of your excess weight lost.
Sleeves net you max 50% of your excess weight lost.

I was at 315 preop weight, so I wanted the result that would net me the most weight lost. That is why I chose the RNY.

Also, RNY has the "added benefit" of dumping. I am a sugar addict and know that I cannot effectively lose weight unless I give up sugar. You can't eat sugar in the same ways or you'll dump: and I needed that over my head.

Last, my insurance wouldn't cover the sleeve. You may want to check with them before you get emotionally tied up in one kind of surgery over another.

I guess I'm a phenomenon, I've lost 88% of my excess weight with "just the sleeve"....

I am in the same boat as you but im going with the RNY because I my BMI is over 50.  I need more than half my weight off and right now I have the Lapband that just didnt work for me.  After speaking with my surgeon I choose RNY is the best surgery for me.  As someone else said earlier in the post you have a low BMI and VSG might be a better choice for you.  Good Luck
