Losing my way....

Well, I was doing so good. I was holding at 180 lbs (down from 360 or so at surgery time in Aug 08), then I hurt my back in September of 2010. I herniated a disk at my L4-L5 with a partially herniated disk at L3-L4. Pain, Pain, PAIN, PAIN! They started me on Nucynta 100 mg every 4 hours with Flexeril every 6-8 hours. When that stopped working for the pain, they started me on Percocet 10/325 2 tabs Q4 hrs, Flexeril 1tab Q6-8 hours. Well, that was in Sept....it's now May and I just got in to see a REAL pain specialist and he put me on MS Contin 60mg 1 tab Q8, Valium 10mg 1 tab Q8, Hydrocodone 10/325 for breakthru pain. I used to work as a CNA at at local hospital, so I burned tracks down the hallways everynight.....now.......NOTHING! I can't hardly stand, walk, sit. I am so depressed. So much so, it seems like it would be better without me here. I looked good at 180, size 10. Well, that is gone now too! I am back up to 235!!! I don't eat much more than I did before. MOST of my snacks are make with sugarfree(splenda) and low to no calories. I try to keep my fat calories and FAT period, LOW. What can I do? My depression is just getting deeper and deeper. I need some ideas to get my tool working my way again. Maybe that will give my something to help bring me out of my depression! HELP ME PLEASE! I am past desperate. I can't exercise much right now because of my back but when I can, you better believe I will be hitting it hot and heavy when I get it fixed!

I am not saying that exercise is not important because of course it is.  However, I have managed to lose weight without any regular exercise and for the most part I am pretty sedentary.  I really think what you eat makes a big difference.
I understand about not being active and getting bored, which leads to eating more.
I think the biggest thing I can say is if you are eating any refined carbs like sugar or bread, eliminate them entirely.  Make sure you always eat protein first and a lot of it.  Make sure you get plenty to drink, just not with meals.  If you need a snack make sure it is high protein.  I don't eat anything unless it is at least 20 grams of protein for a snack.
Detoxing off of the carbs, getting in at least 100 grams of protein and 100 oz of fluids has really helped me lose the excess weight.
I am really sorry about your pain.  I know it must be beyond hard to live like that and food can seem like such a comfort.  I hope they can find a way to help you.

I don't recognize all the meds you have, but perhaps one should be an antidepressant?  There are many to try, ask your doctor.

Also, Sugar substitutes, while having fewer calories, can aid in weight gain.  Try to cut back on anything that is 'sweetened'.

Like Ladytazz says, go back to basics, protein first, limit all carbs, drink plenty of water.  Dont let lack of exercise worry you.  You will get there once your weight comes back down.

Good luck.

Have you seen anyone about having the herniated disks repaired? I have stenosis in L4 & L5 so I can relate to your pain. My chiropractor really helps but mine will "go out" every so often, it's not constant. They can do minimally invasive spinal surgery so the recovery time is much easier, I think you should look into it. Once the pain is gone, you'll be able to exercise or get exercise from work, you'll start losing the weight you've gained and your depression will improve.

I think that Ladytazz gave you a great response.

I have a knee that needs replaced (and some mysterious intermittent severe belly pain), and work 2 jobs while trying to finish a PhD, so there are times when I get no exercise beyond just walking to do whatever the day holds, and I have not gained any weight, so just being sedentary (if you are diligent about food intake) should not cause weight gain.  It does mean, though, that you need to account for the fact that you are not moving around in your caloric intake.... so your calories need to decrease just to keep from gaining.  Are you tracking what you are eating?  With the meds you are on (I'm not familiar with all of them, but am aware of some of them), it would not surprise me if you are eating more than you think you are just because of lack of general alertness.  TRacking will help you knwo exactly what yoiu are consuming.  You mentioned keeping the fat and sugar low, but did not mention simple carbs other than the sugar.  How many simple carbs are you consuming?  How much water are you drinking (in addition to keeping you hydrated, it will help you limit how much you eat)?

It is also possible that one of the meds you are on might be contributing to the weight gain.  Ask your doctor about that, because additional weight will aggravate the physical condition... so your doctor will probably be willing to change to a different med to keep your from continuing to gain.

MOST IMPORTANTLY -- because, in the end, weight is just a number, and you are SO much more than the number on the scale or the number inside your clothes -- please speak to your doctor about starting some kind of antidepressant.  It is unlikely that anything we can say here will help your level of depression, but medication probably would.  It takes a numebr of weeks for most of them to fully "kick in", so please do this ASAP before you end up suicidal.

Take care... and, again, please really recognize that, as distressing as gaining a few pounds might be, you are SO MUCH MORE taan your weight.

Ya'll the depression is getting worse, and the weight gain is getting even worse than before. I weighed in at 250 and have been crying for days now. I can do nothing and it makes me soooo angry! I have cancelled my appointment with Dr. Baker 3 times now and rescdheduled because I feel like such a disgrace and loser, and do NOT want to dissappoint him. I am now on Dilaudid 10 mg every 5 hours with diazapam (Valium) 10mg every 8 hours. I am doing online schooling to keep up with my hours so I don't have to start paying back student loans, AND the school is supposed to send me info on reentering the nursing program in January and I don't know if I would be able to do that because this makeup makes me fall asleep at any moment.

I do have a question for anyone that might know I have 4 boxes of HMR800 shakes that I bought online. Can I drink those to try to lose weight even though I have already had the bypass? I know I lost 20 pounds on them the 2 week I had to drink them before surgery. PLEASE let me know if anyone knows. They are good shakes and I had no problem sticking to them. I also have 2 jugs of regular whey vanilla protein that I mix frozen fruit with and they are HEAVEN!! Thanks for all of your suggestios!
