I am 12 weeks out.  I saw my surgeon today for cysts that she is going to remove from my scalp.  I have not seen her since my 5 wk follow up and am not scheduled again until mid July.  So anyhow - she asked me how I was doing with losing.  I told her 77 all together and 50 since surgery.  She then asked me if I was exercising and I was honest and said, "no".  She then said I should have lost more by now.  (I am 51 and post menopausal, my high weight was 351.4)  She then said I was not going to be successful if I did not exercise.  I know it needs to be a priority and I know I need to do it.  But here is the confusing part - when I was there for my 5 wk and said I felt like I wasn't losing fast enough she said she wanted me to avg. 2 pds per week.  So I am averaging 4 pds per week.   (Of course I did not think of that until I was on my way home because it just caught me so off guard)  So anyhow - just wanted some of your thoughts.  I did send an e-mail the my PA to ask the doc for some clarification.

On a good note - I asked her if I could have some salad and she said yes, just be careful and chew well.  I had a small organic spring mix salad with LF cheese and baked chicken with some light blue cheese dressing.  It was the best meal I have had post op!  Go figure... a salad!

TIA for your thoughts.

Long term success requires exercise.  Start with anything.  Move your bod!
And I hate exercise - but I hate being fatter more.

I saw my surgeon today and I am 10 days shy of being 4 months out, and we had kind of the same discussion. My protein isn't as high as it should be, and neither are my fluids and it may be hindering my weight loss.    I feel like honestly 50lbs in 4months?  That's an accomplishment for me. Even though I feel like a slow loser.  We also had the excercise  talk and I know I need to be doing more, however I was praised for being more active than my pre-surgery self. So, now my new goal is to just up my excercise everyday.  A few more reps on the weights each day, an extra few minutes on the elliptical to get myself where I want to be.  I think you're doing awesome with your weight loss and the excercise will come. 4lbs a week?  That's really good.

And glad you got your salad! :)

You are doing well, your doctor is nuts for being so negative.  That said......exercise will help you in the long term...it is a wonderful habit to get into now for both keeping the weight off and helping you feel energetic and keeping you healthy.  Start with some walking and light weights....it need not be anything hardcore.

I agree with you regarding salad...that is my favorite meal now!

I think you are doing great but I agree about the exercise. If not for now, for later on. You are not going to lose 4 lbs a week forever and soon your food intake/calories will be getting closer and closer to what your body is burning. You have to build some muscle so you can eat more later without gaining, and you need to get in the habit of doing something that moves your body and burns calories. Even if its just thirty minutes walking a day, you can do it.

I had my surgery 10 months ago.  It was a revision and the reason I had it was because it was too malabsorptive and I had problems including severe fatigue.  I had also regained 100lbs so my surgeon made my stomach into a RNY pouch as well as lengthening my intestines so I would absorb more.
Anyway, after my surgery I was still very fatigued and couldn't do hardly any exercise.  I am feeling better but I still haven't gotten into a regular exercise routine.  I just got a bike and if the weather around here ever clears up I plan on riding that and if I can manage to get the money together I would like to join my neighborhood community center that has a pool and weight room.  I want to star****er aerobics again.  But for now I just walk as much as I can for exercise.
In spite of this I have managed to lose all the weight I had gained in less then 10 months.  I'm not saying this like it's a good thing, I am just saying it can be done.  I know that exercising will help with maintenance and my doctors keep nagging me about it just for my general health and to help with my depression but as far as losing weight I personally think that what I eat has a lot to do with it.  I gauge my caloric intake to accommodate my low physical activity.  I am sure that once I  start exercising regularly I will be able to eat a bit more but that isn't really important to me.  Feeling  better is my goal.
