I've been using the bariatric advantage chewable iron since my surgery in January. I'm getting pretty good at swallowing pills, so I was thinking about maybe changing. I know we have to take a specific type of calcium, but Is there a particular type of iron we should take post rny? If so, is there anywhere locally like walmart, CVS or walgreens that I can buy it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Carbonyl.

Walmart and CVS have Feosol, but read the package because while Feosol makes carbonyl, they also make ferrous sulfate and you don't want that one.

Are you serious? Is this a joke?

Please be careful because there could be a newbie out there that will believe this is ok.

Some people seriously do take Flintstones.  Some surgeons even tell them to, believe it or not.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery says not to take kids' vitamins, and if you read the label, you'll see Flintstones does NOT have everything we need, but some people choose to take them anyway for some reason.

Calcium.  It blocks the absorption of iron.  Take them at least two hours apart.

You want to take carbonyl iron which is a highly absorbable iron, easy on the stomach and non-constipating.  You can get it over the counter as Feosol but make sure you read the box and make sure it says carbonyl iron, because they also make it with ferrous sulfate and any iron with ferrous in the name is basically useless.  In order to absorb iron, you need to take it with vitamin C. For every 30mg of iron, you need to take 200mg of vitamin C.  A minimum dosage of iron is usually 60mg but depending on your labs, you might need alot more and some surgeons/NUTS start on higher than that.  My NUTS starts all patients on 150mg.

An even better version of carbonyl iron is tender irons from vitalady.com and it is really cheap.  Something like $35.00 for a bottle of 400.  They are 60mg capsules and they already have the necessary vitamin C in them, so you don't have to buy additional vitamin C like you would with the Feosol.  Taking 1 per day, the bottle would last a year and 2 per day, it would last for 6 months, so that is really a good deal.  I take them and they work really well.

As far as how you take them, you can't take them within 2hours of your calcium or thyroid medication.

When you had your 3 month labs, what was your iron, ferritin, hemoglobin and hemacrit? This would determine your dosage.

Well my Surgeon is very skilled at bariatric Surgery and suggests Flintsones and it is what i take and my labs are all normal. I take the Plus Iron one. I take 2 aday. So not sure what i should be "careful" about but this is whay MY dr. says to take and i know a lot of people that take them and they also have normal levels. If he suggests something else i would take it but it works for me and he is  aDR and knows what he is doing so thanks for your opinion but Not everyone knows what everyone should take. If it works for you and thats what your Dr suggests then go with it. I was responding to the post, not suggesting anyone take what my Dr suggests ask your Dr what they suggest. have a wonderful Day.
