Weak Legs post op
I am 3 weeks out and I feel amazing with one exception, my legs are very weak. I can walk forever, but stairs are killing me, stairs didn't bother me pre op. If I go up one floor at work my thighs are burning. This is very discouraging because I am a hiker and it's that time of year. Do you think I'm just still getting over surgery? I did have a numb spot on my butt for about a week post op (I'm sure it was the positioning on the OR table) but that is gone now. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Yes, it's probably just recovery. Make sure you stay hydrated - not getting enough fluids will make you feel wobbly too. Last summer, I attempted hiking and found that I really lacked stamina -- I think it was learning to balance eating/drinking and just recovery time. I found it much easier to walk mostly flat trails.
I tend to agree with Laura about taking in enough fluids. I am 3 weeks out and was doing really well. I returned to work this past Monday and all that day felt grumblings in my intestines which turned into frequent trips to the ladies room. At first I contributed it to apprehension about returning to what is often a very stressful job, but the "feeling" actually worsened and lasted through Wednesday night. As it turns out, I a brief "bug" went through my family. Anyway, while I was feeling so yucky, I found it very difficult to get in my protein and liquids. Yesterday and today I have had a noticeable weakness in my legs. I believe that I may be suffering from slight dehydration. Today, I have been trying my best to get in all the required fluids/proteins to ensure that I get back on track. I am hoping after a couple of days, these symptoms will subside.
Hang in there. If the weakness persists and you feel you have been following your doctor's protocol, you might want to give him/her a call to discuss.
