I am sure I read on here somewhere some suggestion for an iron supplement that doesn't cause constipation... Does anyone know of one?... I am anemic and I was even before my RNY... I haven't had my labs done since surgery on April 6... I go in 2 weeks for them but I am feeling tired a lot more lately... I haven't been taking my iron supplement as they always seemed to constipated me before surgery... I have extreme constipation now without taking them... Please help if you know of any... Thanks in advance!

carbonyl iron supplements are not as bad with constipation.  I buy a brand from Wal Mart called Feosol.  (Make sure you get the carbonyl iron one).  There are other brands out there as well.  I am sure others will post.

Carbonyl iron.  Two brands are Sundown Perfect iron and Feosol - jus****ch with the Feosol because they also make ferrous sulfate and that WILL constipate you.

Hmmm.....

Hey Kelly?

I take Feosol, two a day.  Assuming I'm not having any serious constipation issues, is ferrous sulfate ok for us for absorption?

Thanks!

We absorb carbonyl better.

If you're not constipated, though, I'd go ahead and finish the ferrous sulfate you have, then buy the Feosol carbonyl next time.

(I knew you'd know!)

I like the Feosols 'cuz they're tiny, and don't make me burp a nasty taste. I'll get their carbonyl next time.

Thanks for being such a great resource!

I you want an even cheaper version of carbonyl iron and they work better, are easier on the stomach and are less constipating, go to vitalady.com - they are called tender irons.  They come in a bottle of 400 for approx. $20.  The best part is that they have the necessary vitamin C in them to help you absorb them better.  With the feosol, you have to pay extra to buy a separate vitamin tablet plus you have to swallow more pills.  If you opt for Feosol, just know for every 30mg of iron  - you need 200mg of vitamin C.

The tender irons are 60mg each, so figure out your dosing accordingly.  Feosols are 45mg each.  They are tiny capsules and they don't make you burp a nasty taste.

Yeah, Proferrin is heme iron, which also should not cause constipation.  Another nice thing about it is you can take it with your calcium.  It's more expensive than carbonyl iron, though.
