When you first wake up from RNY...Is the pain that horrible?
I woke up in pain. I was pretty grogy right away, so I can't really say the level of pain that I was in, but I think it was bad. I remember saying, "Pain. Pain. I'm in pain." The recovery nurse was by my side and hit my pain pump and then put it in my hand. I felt instant relief. After that I was in pain, but not terrible pain. On day two when they took my pain pump away and gave me liquid pains meds, I was doing well. I had only been pressing the pain pump every now and then and not every few minutes. With the oral meds, I was a little more uncomfortable and needed them as often as I was allowed to take then (I think that was every 6 hours). But I wasn't in terrible, excrusiating pain. This was also my first surgery.
In the beginning i felt a little nausious....just s little....and my belly felt sore....then they pumped me with a bunch of meds i went to sleep for a long time...then when i woke up my belly was still a little sore but what bothered me more was my back....from laying down for so long...once i was up and walking everything started feeling better. i dont think i ever rated it higher than a five on the pain scale when they woud ask me to rate it.
its my first real surgery...i did have my tonsels out when i was little but hardly remember it.

You are going to be ok! Yes, it hurts a little, but the gas for me was way worse than the surgery. Just hit your pain pump as often as it will let you, and walk, walk, walk!! Being your first surgery, you don't know how it feels to have your insides moved around-it's kinda like they are bruised, or really bad menstrual cramps. But, again, the quicker you walk and move around the better.
My doc let me have Biotene, a mouth spray that you don't swallow, that increases your saliva production. It also comes under the name Oasis. If they will let you have it, it will make the time between surgery and sipping a lot more bearable. Good luck, sister!

I woke up sick. That's all I could focus on. Granted, anesthesia makes me VERY sick, so that was my main issue. I did have some pain, but I knew that I had to walk and get the gas moving and out. I had had 8 surgeries before this one, so I knew to walk, walk, walk. That's my advice. Keep up with your pain meds so you don't hurt and walk as much and a soon as you can. You'll do great.
I didn't have any pain at all when I first woke up. I did do the pain pump in the hospital bed, but usually only when someone told me to do a fast "shot" of it before starting to move. I probably didn't really need it. Once I got home I didn't do the pain pills unless it was a day I was really overdoing it. That being said, I've had 9 surgeries and this was a pretty easy one for me. Everyone reacts differently to surgery and it's hard to know exactly how your body will react unless you've had a surgery before. However, the pain if you do have some, is usually over with fairly fast, and they will have pain medications for you to take. Good luck!

I was in no pain at all on the inside. The only discomfort I felt was in the incisions when trying to get out of bed. I didn't use any pain meds in the hospital or at home. However, I did wake up in the recovery room throwing up blood. That freaked me out a little bit. Later that night I started having bloody bowel movements. Lots of blood and clots coming out. I actually ruined my brand new pair of pajamas the next day as I was nodding off and passed gas only to have a bunch of blood come out.
