Hair is going - going -almost gone
I am four months out and have lost 55 lbs since surgery. I have had two dillations due to a stricture. I developed an ulcer on my right foot and it took months to heal. Had to wear a boot. The left knee did not like walking in the boot so it has become temperamental. I think I may finally be able to do water aerobics and or yoga to get this losing streak started. Wham - now I am losing my hair by the handfulls. Doc says it is tera??? effluvian. It is a body's natural response to surgery, weight loss, hormone changes etc., and nothing I can do to stop it. Biotin can help but not for certain. It has to run it's course. I will need a cap soon if this keeps up.

Sorry you had so much on your plate. I Know what you mean with the hair, we all go through it. I was really worried too for a while because my hair would come out by at least two full handfuls in the shower and hair was just.... all over the place. I was starting to look at wigs because the loss was really noticeable around my temple area.
It started in the middle of April and as of 2 weeks ago it has DRASTICALLY slowed down and what I mean is that only half a handful if that comes out now. My new growth is coming in great. I have been taking biotin since surgery, although it supposedly doesn't actually help with hair loss just hair re growth. My hair is super shiny now too, maybe from all the vitamins and protein. Keep your protein up, I think that helps too. I'm 5 and a half months out by the way. Best wishes.

I have been losing my hair for the past 25 years. It has been extremely thin on top but the sides and back were okay. I always liked wearing bangs but no longer could. Believe it or not, when I had my weight loss surgery, I didn't lose anymore hair. I thought there was nothing left to lose. I was so wrong. I had some major complications and in Oct 2010 I had to have 4 major surgeries between Oct. 2010 and Feb. 2011. Well, I was lucky to be alive. Needless to say, I lost almost all of my hair - on the top, the sides and the back. I was embarrassed to go out in public. I proceeded to wear my hair in ponytails everyday. A few weeks ago, I went to my nieces high school granduation and I saw the pictures with my hair down. I was mortified. I actually reminded myself of my grandmother when she had lost most of her hair before she started wearing a wig.
Well, after discussing it with my sister-in=law, we decided that i needed to get a wig. I was far gone with no end in sight. So, the next weekend we went shopping in NJ and we picked out a wig. What a process. You can check out my profile and see the photos - you can see my new hairdue. Now, next weekend, I have to go to a bar mitzvah - I won't be so embarrassed to be in pictures.

A friend of mine said I should get a blonde wig because you know what they say about blondes. So far I am not going to go there yet. I hear wigs are so hot to wear and I get hot enough during the day as it is. Glad you beat the surgeries. I guess hair is a small loss compared to the win of being alive. I will count my blessings and deal with the hair. God Bless you.
My suggestion to you, and some will disagree, is to take a specifically formulated *bariatric* multivitamin. Such as Celebrate or Bariatric Advantage or something similar.
Why? My hair also started falling out in GOBBS and I mean gobbs around month 2 of my weightloss. I was not taking a proper multivitamin nor ingesting the proper amount of protein.
For the few months or so now, I have been taking a specifically formulated *bariatric* multivitamin and ingesting (mostly drinking) 60+ g of protein and my hair has almost stopped falling out. I still get a tiny bit here and there, but its WAY better than it was. I make sure its whey protein isolate, which is what everyone agrees is best...
If your curious, I take Celebrate Multivitamins, and drink Syntrax Nectar mixed with 12oz Vitamin Water ZERO. I buy them at www.bariatricchoice.com and never pay shipping or tax.
Just a suggestion to consider.
I currently take Bariatric Advantage Vitamins daily and keep close track of my protein. I have been getting 45 - 60 grams of protein but I am wondering if my body needs more. Dermatologist and Weight Loss docs said take Biotin so I got them all covered. Hair so thin on top I can see skin. Hope it doesn't last much longer. Thanks for the info
Now I see why you are having trouble with hair loss. 45-60 grams of protein is for a newbie at like 1month out. By 4months out you should be up at atleast 80-90 grams per day. I think I didn't lose anymore hair after my gastric bypass due to my high protein ingestion. I drank protein shakes 2 times per day with 35 -45 grams of protein in each, so I got 70-90 grams of protein just from my shakes plus my food. My problems began 2 years later when I suffered malmutrition after my other surgeries.
i have alopecia, so i can relate . hope it comes back . it is very hard to live this way .. mine is from mucle and nerve damage from an abusive relationship . but i just learned to live with it . i guess i can honestly say if somebody ask me if i would wanna be fat or bald . id pik bald . aint that sad??? but u can get on line and order full lace human hair wigs and glue them on. they , look , feel and wash like real hair because it is . it can stay on for weeks . they run about 200 a piece but last along time. u can actually go on e-bay and get em cheaper sometimes. but u can also get synthetics. they are realy cheap . they are very pretty . try that to make you feel better .
I had thin hair before surgery and actually started wearing wigs then. I love my wigs - wouldn't go back to thin hair ever. You get used to them - I started wearing one in the fall so I wouldn't have to get used to the wig and the heat all at once. I started out 5 or so years ago as a blond but since then have gone grey both on my head and on my wig and I love my grey hair. I'd rather people say I look good for my age than say I am an old woman trying to look young!
Wearing the wig is very freeing - no worries about getting ready for work in the AM.
Hugs,
Lana
