Vitamins Right After Surgery?

 Hi All,
I am on day 3-post op. I left the hospital the day after surgery, no complications (YAY!), but with my discharge information, they did not give a list of vitamins to start taking for the first week, and I haven't been able to get ahold of my surgeon. What vitamins were people taking right after surgery?
PS I know the pills have to be liquid or crushed. Any help would be great! Thanks,
Steph

You need to be taking prenatal vitamins and calcium citrate everyday.  You can start them right away.  My doctor told me I could take the pill form right off the hop.  He had me take them while still in the hospital.  I unfortunatly can not swallow pills since the sugery but you can crush them up (sandwich bag and a hammer required) and put it in a teaspoon of what you are eating.

At costco you can get a great liquid calcium citrate that tastes like vinilla.  You can throw it in a drink and is cheap to.

I was taking my multivitamin (chewable) as soon as I got home from the hospital.  I did not take calcium right away, but I just swallowed all my regular prescription meds and the couple of other vitamins (zinc and B complex)... I was not required to crush anything.

 Used2BThin,
You take pre-natal vitamins? Is that a pretty normal vitamin to take after WLS?

Pre-natals are not the usuul recommended vitamin.... they are specifically designed for the nutritional needs of pregnant women and developing babies.  Two regular decent multivitamins (e.g. Centrum) are fine adn will meet or exceeed the ASMBS recommendations for post-op supplementation.

I was sent home taking the multiple vit, chewable and b-12 immediately. I started D3 about a week later, and calcium and iron at 5 weeks.

Like everything, each surgeon has their own protocol.

I had my surgery with Dr. Carl Nohr and he is the one who said prenatal so did the nut he uses.  It is because of the higher iron and the folic acid which is needed after the surgery.  So I would not say it is unusual to take them as that is what his patients take.  Most of the people I have had contact with who have seen him also take prenatals as well.

my doctor told me to take a chewable bariatric vitamin starting on my 2 week reduction liquid diet before surhery . After surgery for the first day home it was one for that day , day 2 was 2 vitamins , day 3 was 3 vitamins , day 4 was 4 vitamins and remain on 4 per day for ever . I take the Bariatric Fusion it comes in variety of flavors . I believe u can find them online at Bariatricfusion.com , and also at bariatricchoice.com . They include your calcium so no need to take extra pills .   I would check with your surgeon before starting anything though i have realized on this site alot of doctors have different ways. But my surgeon and all his staff have beaten into my brain the importance of my vitamins for rest of my life !!!!!  Please check on it because i would hate for you to end up with a deficiency so early in the path to be healthy.  hope this helps you out a bit

Check with your doctor.  This is is what I was given before my surgery and took what I bought to the hospital for the nurse to see if it was correct and to go over a schedule.

I started the first full day home from the hospital.

Multivitamin - chewable 2x a day.  200% daily value for the 2/3 of nutrients. At least 18 mg iron.  I use Centrium chewable.

Calcium Citrate with vitamin D3.  Total = 1500-2000 mg chewable.  I bought this at the Vitamin Shoppe because I could not find it at Wal-Mart.  I take this 3 x a day, do not take with the multivitamin

B12 - sublingual 500 micrograms  1x a day

Zinc - 50 mg daily 1x a day

Vitamin D 1000IU  1x a day

For my Iron it's a prescription.
