I'm still in my pureed stage and this weekend is the fourth of July and my birthday. We are attending a family BBQ and I'm trying to figure out what I can eat. Would it be acceptable to throw a bit of a hamburger and some fat free cheese in the blender to eat? Has anyone done this?

lol that does sound gross.. a friend of mines son had to have his mouth wired shut  (broke his jaw) and he was a major athlete and he pureed everything in the blender, roast, hotdogs.. everything!!! yucko!!! I'd say have fun at the bbq and drink a shake instead!

Beef may be difficult to digest now, as most surgeons usually delay approving beef until around month 5 post op.  You may end up with an upset pouch, which may ruin your time at the outing. DAVE

Beef was on my list from my NUT when I entered the soft food stage.

I ate some cheeseburger when I was 22 days out from surgery. It was very lean Angus beef that was cooked in the broiler. I ate about 2oz of it without the bun and chewed the bejesus out of it. It was yummy.

Fat free cheese is an abomination.

If you're still in purees, I would not eat burger. The thing to remember about purees is that during this phase there are certain foods you eat because of their COMPOSITION not just the texture. The meat in the burger may not work for you and do you really want to find that out at a BBQ in front of everyone?

Plus, you need to be compliant with your plan. If there's an approved list of foods you should eat, eat from it. It sort of sucks but separating out your needs from your wants can only help you in post-op life.

I didn't puree anything, but then again a cheeseburger STILL won't sit well with me. I do better with hot dogs. Maybe baked beans or something instead?!? I'd take a shake and be safe rather than find out the hard, miserable way in front of everyone!

my dietician told me to stay away from beef/pork for 6 months post op. Good luck!

I am 8 mo post op and still have problems eating beef, pork and chicken. We had BBQ memorial and I tried to eat beef brisket and then a bite of bbq chicken and it did not sit well with me... I ended up losing the meat but I did eat the potatoe salad and baked beans and watermelon. everyone was feeling sorry for me but I was satisfied and kept telling them I was fine. I Have yet to eat any kind of bread , it scares the beejezzes out of me bc I heard it can bind your pouch up. Just eat soft foods and maybe prepare to take your own incase their is nothing that you can eat. you will be satisfied....your mind may not be but ur tummy will be.
