Should I cancel my surgery?

I need some advice. I'm supposed to be on a liquid diet but after a few days I go insane and eat... a lot. Then, I start over agin the next day. I guess I wondering if I can't do it now will I really be able to do it after surgery? I've spent the last 7 months getting ready for this and I can't seem to control myself at all. My surgery is a week from Monday and I'm really not sure what to do. Did anyone else struggle like this and go through with the surgery and have success? I just don't know what to do... In the meantime, I'm starting over today. Feeling sad and like a failure...and trying to figure out if I will ever be able to change. Help...

First of all, youre not a failure.  stop it.

Secondly, my surgeon told me there are two purposes for the 2 weeks liquids before surgery.  the first one being that it shrinks your liver for surgery.  The doctor needs to work around it, and if its too large, he might have to cut you all the way open instead of the 5 tiny cuts he makes.  Secondly, the liquid diet is a prep for you to just loose a little weight and prep you for whats to come.  Sorta "cleans you out" a little.

Re: you mention you loose control.  Trust me on this when i tell you that you will NOT want to eat after surgery.  You may think you want it after surgery, and smell it, but as soon as you put it to your tongue, you will be like, umm I dont want this and spit it out.  thats the way it was for me, and quite a few people I have read on this forums.  After surgery i was GLAD to only be on liquids and broth for 2 weeks.

In the end though, your decision needs to BE YOUR OWN.  Dont beat yourself up please.  This is a major life changing surgery, and its a difficult decision for many.

I can say though, that the surgery will help you change.  You have no choice. hehe

You are not a failure. Food is a crazy addiction and I think just for lasting a few days you are awesome.
I wi**** was like that (what the last poster stated) after surgery for me....well.......it was for the first week, after that I was right back to wanting food like a crazy woman!
I was on my period which I think had a lot ot do with the cravings but I did cheat somewhat which I have beat myself up about and wish I could go back in time.
I am just telling you this as a warning, I still dont think you should cancel your surgery though. Go through with it, try your best and see what happens.

My surgeon didn't even have s 2 week liquid plan, just a few weeks of low carb and the day before surgery liquids only.  I didn't even follow the low carb diet!  How bad was that!  I ate everyday before surgery like it was the last day I was ever going to eat in my life.

I did do the liquid right before, cause I started to worry about not being able to get the surgery (sort of late for that right!).  I got the surgery no problem.  You will too.

Just keep trying your best.  Once you have the surgery you may want "bad" foods but you will have the control not to eat them.  Your hunger may still be there it will just be different, it is hard to explain you will just have to wait and see.  Everyone has different experiences.

Don't cancel your surgery unless you don't want to give up your old habits.  It's like smoking, if you want to quit you will and the surgery is a great tool to help you be successful.

You are not a failure and you shouldn't cancel your surgery based on the liquid diet.  You won't be able to eat after the surgery so overeating won't be a problem and then as time goes on..eating just is not the focus anymore and even though I can eat anything I want to right now I don't because I'm just not hungry like I used to be and even if I do try to indulge like just now my daughter made home made banana bread I decided to have 1/2 a piece and it's sitting like a rock in my chest so there is no way I could eat 3 pieces like the pre op me would want to!   If the liquid diet or any diet were easy we would all just diet and not need this tool!  Good luck you will do great!

(((hugs)))  You are not a failure!  Jumping through all the insurance hoops and the pre-op diet were the WORST part of this journey (for me anyway)  It's hard to just go to only liquids.  Do try to stay on the diet but if you are really hungry, make sure to call your NUT for some food that you could perhaps eat.  Some were allowed small amounts of chicken, turkey, etc... Just know that you are not alone.  It's really, really tough.  Like the other posters said, after surgery, you will not feel like eating at all.  I could barely get down my liquids!  I didn't want to even look at food for the longest time, lol.  You'll be fine.  Just do your best.

Thanks for the support everyone! I need it. I'm going to keep trying and I will contact the NUT to see if she has any advice for how to deal with my hunger. I love this forum...it's really been a life line for me. Thanks again!

You might want to consider starting a relationship with a therapist in your area that has experience with bariatric surgery or eating disorders. While I'm not saying that you should cancel your surgery, this kind of behaviour could be difficult to deal with or hazardous after surgery. You'll want to work on some coping mechanisms and strategies to get you through, and better to start earlier than later, so that your therapist knows you for when things get tough.

You may also want to spend some time journalling what has happened since starting your pre-op diet. It is valuable to understand what it is that triggered the eating, how you felt physically and emotionally, what you ate, how you chose what you ate. Learning from it will help you get stronger.
